> Town and Country
A string of picturesque villages, or... In praise of the slower life
It takes time to discover the Eastern Townships' many treasures - not everything can be done in a day. The charm of our picturesque villages isn't only in architectural attractions or the spectacular countryside, but also from our residents' quality of life and pride in maintaining that heritage. Many of our villages are often cited in different historical and tourist publications. They're among Quebec's - and Canada's - finest jewels! Whether tucked away in a valley or perched on a mountaintop, our heritage buildings greatly enhance the magnificent natural setting. Some villages have preserved their old-world character by maintaining century homes in their original state. Those buildings often associated with a focal point of great importance to the founding community, such as a church or a mill that will gladly tell you its story.
The villages presented in this section were chosen by the Association des Plus Beaux Villages du Québec, or mentioned in the book Villages Pittoresques du Québec. French text and photos are by Yves Laframboise, Éditions de l'Homme, 1996.
