The Society was organized at a picnic held August 18, 1897, on a farm in West Brome to celebrate the centenary of the first land grant made in Brome Township. The society was formally incorporated March 9, 1898. The Old Academy was built in 1854 and was once the Knowlton Academy. At the turn of the century it ceased to be used as a school and in 1903 was turned over to the Society for a museum as a memorial to the donor, the Hon. Paul Holland Knowlton. The Martin Annex was the gift of the late Zelotes E. Martin, a native of Brome Country, to house the "Fokker DVII" airplane, unique in Canada and the war museum. This addition was opened by Sir Robert Borden, August 26, 1921.
