Quand vient le temps de s’offrir une journée de randonnée pédestre et de communion avec la nature, bien des gens recherchent les lieux les plus populaires. Tout l’opposé de mon ami Roberto qui arpente le Québec dans ses moindres sillons depuis des décennies en fuyant les foules autant que possible. Je dois à Roberto une belle découverte : le secteur Kingsbury, des Sentiers de l’Estrie.

« Les œuvres se font des cachettes », a un jour écrit Félix Leclerc. Ces mots me sont venus à l’esprit alors que je parcourais les sentiers rouge, jaune et orange qui forment des boucles totalisant une quinzaine de kilomètres sur les 25 de la zone Kingsbury. Dans ce secteur méconnu des Cantons-de-l’Est, les montagnes font place à des collines qui grimpent et dévalent dans une forêt assez dense. On se balade entre 149 et 242 mètres pour des niveaux de difficulté très facile à facile selon l’itinéraire emprunté. Isolé, mais pas éloigné : Kingsbury ne se trouve qu’à 25 minutes de Sherbrooke ou 30 de Drummondville.
Sillonner les abords de la rivière au Saumon qui s’alimente au sud par le lac Brompton, ceux du parc national du Mont-Orford et la St-François m’entiche particulièrement. Là où les sommets se rétrécissent sur notre passage alors que nous gagnons un peu d’altitude (bornes kilométriques 11,5 à 13), il en résulte une étonnante impression de canyon. La falaise La Rouche et la vallée glaciaire du ruisseau Gulf se révèlent fort jolies aussi. Au fil des kilomètres, la végétation mixte couvre le canton d’épinettes, de pruche, de bouleaux jaunes et divers feuillus.
Vous pouvez amorcer votre randonnée près du barrage de Kingsbury (érigé en 1890!) sinon depuis le marais de Kingsbury, site ornithologique reconnu, en vous dirigeant vers le sud où le sentier propose différents belvédères naturels pour admirer le panorama et la rivière au Saumon. Il mène à deux occasions à une voie alternative qui rejoint chaque fois l’axe principal. Peu importe votre choix, je vous recommande au retour de vous imprégner de cette vie d’autrefois dans le village. Une mine d’ardoise valut une certaine prospérité à la localité à la fin des années 1800. Et j’ose un dernier conseil : d’où que vous arriviez, ralentissez sur les routes régionales, prenez le temps d’apprécier les coups d’œil, souvent sublimes, de ces Cantons-de-l’Est moins fréquentés.
Oui, les œuvres se font des cachettes parfois…
Joseph-Armand Bombardier (Valcourt est à proximité) a acheté à Kingsbury, en 1946-47, une grande partie des terrains du village, soit 5000 à 6000 acres de terres à bois avec des droits d’eau de huit lacs des environs. S’en ait suivi l’acquisition de l’ancienne scierie pour y établir une usine de production de pièces de caoutchouc nécessaires à l’autoneige qu’il cherchait à développer. Placements Bombardier a récemment légué la majorité de ces terres au ministère de l’Environnement et à Conservation Nature Canada afin d’assurer leur protection à perpétuité.
Assurez-vous de vous procurer à l'avance vos droits d’accès sur le site web des Sentiers de l’Estrie qui est un organisme à but non lucratif dont la principale mission est de promouvoir la marche en rendant accessibles ces sentiers. Plusieurs bénévoles s’investissent énormément pour l’entretien, des travaux et réparations, la signalisation, etc.
Je tiens d’ailleurs à souligne le travail de l’aménagiste et architecte du paysage de métier, également sociologue, Jean-Pierre Marcoux, âgé de 75 ans. Il accomplit une formidable besogne comme bénévole des Sentiers de l’Estrie à Kingsbury. La communauté des randonneurs lui doit énormément.
Plusieurs propriétaires accordent des droits de passage à condition que les chiens soient interdits. Merci de respecter leur souhait.
