Notre-Dame-des-Bois

Sector Megantic Region Population: 923

At an altitude of 555 metres, Notre-Dame-des-Bois is one of the highest villages in Quebec. Established in 1877, it was given the name of Notre-Dame-des-Bois in honour of the Virgin Mary. At the base of Mount Mégantic and Mount Saint-Joseph, this village is surrounded by a sea of mountains, from Marbre Mountain to Saddle and Urban mountains, including the White Mountains, which form the New Hamphire and Maine border. The main entrance to the Parc National du Mont-Mégantic provincial park, this ultimate outdoor destination—which doubles as a scientific attraction that is unique in Quebec in the heart of the first international dark sky reserve—appeals to both astronomy lovers and hikers. The public-oriented science education events and activities as well as the many hiking trails have garnered the area a fine reputation. Outside the village, a Summit Drive stop highlights the area and has interpretation panels.
