Sherbrooke is an urban tourist destination where cultural, sports, and heritage activities take place in an exceptional natural setting. Located at the confluence of the St. Francis and Magog rivers, Sherbrooke, with its irregular topography of valleys and flat terrain, is the sixth largest city in Quebec and the regional capital of the Eastern Townships. Domaine Howard, in the Old North ward, and the Bishop’s University campus in the Borough of Lennoxville, are tangible signs of the English-speaking community’s significant contribution to the city’s development. Sherbrooke has a reputation for gourmet excellence based on the talents of its chefs and the diversity of its many Chefs créateurs restaurants and Cafés de village. The Marché de la Gare and the Halte des Pèlerins vineyard, which is on the Route des vins de l’Estrie, offer an abundant variety of regional products. Music is part of Sherbrooke’s DNA and a key component of the city’s cultural programming, with renowned performance venues such as the Centre culturel de l’Université de Sherbrooke and the majestic art deco performance hall at the Granada Theatre. Summer is also lively with many outdoor musical performances, including those at Place Nikitotek, a covered outdoor theatre on the banks of the Magog River, which this year will present a tribute to Starmania by Québec Issime. Also featured will be the Concerts de la Cité and other festivals which enliven the downtown core until late in the night with its bars, microbreweries, and terraces. In addition to the permanent and unique exhibitions at the Sherbrooke Museum of Nature and Science and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Sherbrooke, the city has a circuit highlighting 16 trompe-l’oeil outdoor murals, an exclusivity in Quebec. Explore this route with Muralis, a unique augmented-reality inspired app that brings to life the stories of these extraordinary frescoes. An enchanting setting and a great meeting place in the very heart of the city is the trail from Lac des Nations, past the Marché de la Gare public market, to the Magog River Gorge. Sherbrooke could not be described by the term "urban nature" without its wide range of outdoor activities within the city limits. Options include canoeing or kayaking on one of its three rivers, exploring one or more of the 14 walking trails, cycling on the 125 km of bike trails in summer or one of the 4 snow-biking trails in winter, and all sorts of activities on the mountain in the heart of the city—all of which contribute to Sherbrooke's reputation as a sports-oriented city. Looking for an unusual way to explore the city? To discover the city from another perspective, enjoy a guided tour with a volunteer greeter, who will be delighted to accompany you and share their knowledge and love of their city. They, along with the many hoteliers, innkeepers, campground managers, activity site managers, and merchants welcome tourists with open arms.
