Compton

Sector Coaticook River Valley Population: 3,279

Birthplace and resting place of Louis Stephen St. Laurent, Prime Minister of Canada from 1948 to 1957, the charming municipality of Compton emerged from a mix of Anglophone and Francophone backgrounds. This blending of cultures was carried over to the St. Laurent’s quaint general store and home, now classified as a Parks Canada national historic site. In the surrounding area, and on the Townships Trail, the Drouin covered bridge (1897), picturesque hamlet of Moe’s River (1832), roadside crosses, cemeteries, churches, and panoramic Cochrane road enhance the scenery. Today considered in the region as a mecca of organic farming and a gourmet rendezvous, the area’s agritourism businesses offer a vast array of local products that delight everyone: apples, pears, strawberries, raspberries, maple products, blueberries, grapes, currants, vegetables, medicinal plants, herbs, and the famous cheeses from Fromagerie La Station. Its orchards and its gourmet festival Les Comptonales attract great crowds as soon as autumn comes around.
