Ayer's Cliff

Sector Memphrémagog Population: 1,112

The place name Ayer’s Cliff, adopted in 1904, reflects the site’s unique characteristic—the cliff towering over the southern shore of beautiful Lake Massawippi. It also commemorates Thomas Ayer, who introduced the railway in 1799. In the late 18th century, a small stagecoach inn welcomed travellers from the United States. This tradition of hospitality continues today with numerous tourist accommodation sites along the lake. A stop on the Townships Trail, Ayer's Cliff has kept its Anglo-Saxon allure with its heritage homes, attractive bandstand, and fairgrounds where a public market is held on Saturdays throughout the summer. The Stanstead County Agricultural Society will hold the 171st edition of its fair—one of the oldest in the province—in summer 2016. The tourism offer also includes the Tomifobia Nature Trail along the river of the same name, which goes to Stanstead. By boat, you can easily explore Lake Massawippi, which in Abenaki means "lake of deep waters."
