Spotlight on Ice Wines to warm the heart this winter

2010-12-08, from The Wine Route

Brome-Missisquoi, December 2010 – For a third year, Spotlight on Ice Wines is back to warm the heart of winter by offering various activities around the theme of ice wines and late harvest wines of the Brome-Missisquoi Wine Route. The weekends of January 22 and 29 as well as February 5 will be dedicated to the discovery of liqueur wines through various activities at the region's inns, restaurants, hotels, ski hills and wineries.

The Auberge des Appalaches and the Auberge West Brome will offer respectively a special 5 and 7 course menu while alternating ice wine and white wine. The oenologist for a night will be based on a sensory experience guided by Benoît Lajeunesse, a professional sommelier, where every guest will discover the exquisite marriage between ice wines and fine foods. The Chateau Bromont hotel and the Decanted Series (specializing in wine discovery events) will hold a special evening featuring ice wine and music in the company of sommelier Guénaël Revel.

To this will be added À table avec un vigneron (sitting down with a wine grower) where the guests can share a meal in the company of a wine grower who will present their vineyard and their wines. Le Relais of Auberge Knowlton and the Tire-Bouchon restaurant of l'Orpailleur have confirmed their involvement.

The "Create your personal vintage" event of the vignoble de la Bauge is back this year, with a new feature that brings in a demonstration of the ice wine harvest (weather permitting). In some vineyards you will have the chance to do a chocolate and ice wine tasting (at the Chapelle Ste-Agnès, Côtes d'Ardoise, de la Bauge, the Domaine Les Brome and Gagliano wineries) in partnership with a local chocolate shop. As well, the Orpailleur winery will offer a tasting workshop for ice wines and late harvest wines hosted by a sommelier. Also, François Dompierre, a well-known musician and epicurean, is organizing "Dompierre Ludique" a culinary workshop where the guests will learn to cook with ice wine and then get to taste their gourmet creations at the end of the activity.

Mont Sutton will also be a part by offering ice wine-based après-ski drinks and by creating a menu for the restaurant that promotes this nectar. As well, an ice wine themed ice sculpture will be created for the occasion.

Note that the Spa Bromont and the Balnea Spa are, respectively, offering packages and promotions for the occasion, and that the Auberge des Appalaches, Auberge Knowlton and the Motel Bromont are creating packages to promote ice wine and related activities.

As a part of the Spotlight on Ice Wines 2011 event, the Brome-Missisquoi CLD is organizing, in cooperation with the SAQ, a contest to determine the best ice wines in the Eastern Townships. The winning wines will be chosen on January 11, 2011.
