The Collection: The Peter Winkworth Collection at Library and Archives Canada is a nationally significant collection of rare and valuable art that documents more than four centuries of Canadian history. This comprehensive collection is the culmination of one person’s passion for early Canadian art and is a testament to his commitment to preserving Canada’s heritage.

The Exhibition: In accordance with Library and Archives Canada’s mandate of providing access to our national treasures, and with Mr. Winkworth’s lifelong goal of sharing his collection with others, the Winkworth acquisition is now being presented to Canadians through a series of regional venues. Each one focuses on developments in Canadian history as they relate to conflict and commerce, the geography of the land and the nature of its inhabitants, and the evolution of Canadian society.

In Quebec, 84 historical works of are presented under the title Early Impressions of Quebec. These works, by artists such as James Peachey, George Heriot, Cornelius Krieghoff, Frances Anne Hopkins and Joseph Légaré provide the viewer with a variety of artistic styles, and a sweeping view of the era’s lively society and the region’s spectacular landscape. Peter Winkworth’s interest in depictions of the province of his birth is demonstrated through the beauty and the number of works he collected from this region.

This is a must-see exhibition as much for its aesthetic value as for its historical interest: The Peter Winkworth Collection of Canadiana. Early Impressions of Quebec, from January 20 to March 18 2007, at Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke. Open from noon until 5 p.m., from Tuesday to Sunday.
