The Many Pleasures of Autumn in the Townships

2006-09-01, from Tourism Eastern Townships

Sherbrooke , September 2006  The Eastern Townships, a premier fall destination, brims over with activities and attractions that appeal to all tastes - especially during the color season.

 A palette of colors

Come September, the breathtaking landscapes of the Eastern Townships are clad in a variety of dazzling autumn colors ranging from yellow to ochre, then changing to deep oranges and crimson. To enjoy Mother Nature’s fall performance to the max, why not head for a mountain top? You can get to the summits a variety of ways ; by chairlift at Mont Sutton, Mont Orford, SkiBromont.com and Owl’s Head; on foot up Mont Ham or by car to the lofty peak of Mont Mégantic. No matter how you get there, the views are well worth the effort! Within its four national parks and other protected green spaces, the Eastern Townships offers outdoor lovers and walkers more than 250 kilometres (155 miles) of hiking trails.

Mouthwatering flavors

The fall is also harvest season and regional cuisine is a major draw for amateur foodies and epicures alike. The produce of the land abounds on the tables of the Eastern Townships and local chefs love introducing diners to the special ingredients that they highlight on their menus.  Visitors can also meet the farmers and producers, source of many of the regional foods, by following five circuits agrotouristiques (agricultural circuits). A brochure entitled Parcours exquis, Charme des gîtes et petites auberges (Exquisite Travels - Charming Bed & Breakfasts and Country Inns) outlines the routes, as well as listing a score of food producers and 30 inns and B & Bs.

A unique, 132-km (82 mile) driving tour, Route des vins (The Wine Route) links 12 wineries and seven charming villages.  This year the route is showcasing the gastronomy of the region. 17 restaurants and inns are offering a « terroir » menu with local wines, until the end of October.

This fall,  you could have the opportunity to play “wine producer for the day”. Vignoble de la Bauge and Vignoble La Mission will initiate neophytes into the mysteries of winemaking, from the harvesting and pressing of grapes to the fermentation process. What better way to understand how wine producers work and to appreciate what goes into the making of a good wine?

If you’re planning that special last picnic of the season before winter descends, then a snack at a winery more than fit the bill.  You don’t even need to bring along a basket. Vignoble Le Cep d’Argent and Vignoble Les Blancs Coteaux will furnish all the fixings, including a bottle of house wine.

Gently does it on two wheels

Gently does it or full speed ahead, cyclists will get a good workout along the 7 circuits «clés en main» (seven « good to go » routes) organized by ÉKILIB.  The company, which plans the itinerary in advance, offers packages that include tourist attractions, meals, lodging and baggage transportation from one destination to the next. One-stop shopping for bikers!  Cyclists who prefer to design their own itineraries can do so very easily with the help of the carte interactive (interactive map) or by getting hold of a copy of a brochure and map called Les Cantons-de-l’Est à vélo. (Cycling the Eastern Townships).

Mountain biking is just as popular as touring in the Eastern Townships. There are dozens of kilometres of trails at  SkiBromont.com, Parc de la Gorge de Coaticook and along Circuit des frontières, the bike routes around East Hereford .

Fall festivities

The combination of fall colors, the unique light and the heady smells of autumn on a crisp, sunny day puts visitors in a festive mood. It’s a season to celebrate and have fun! That’s easy in the Eastern Townships. At this time of year, the region plays host to some 30 festivals. Don’t miss the Fëte des vendanges, (a wine fest), Foire agricole de Brome, (the Brome Fair), the brand new Comptonales, La Tournée des 20 (Artists’ studio tours) or Canard en fête (the Brome Lake Duck Festival).
