The Icing on the Cake : Mario Deslauriers on fire at L’International Bromont’s $125,000 CN Grand-Prix!

Bromont, July 29, 2007 – Two weeks of international level competitions at L’International Bromont presented by CN ended today with the eagerly awaited $125,000 CN Grand Prix. This FEI sanctioned class was designed by Quebec’s own Pierre Jolicoeur. The 22 American and Canadian riders who participated in this event faced a course that featured 16 jumping efforts with obstacles set at a height of 1.6m and a 2m wide water jump, to be ridden in a time set at 81 seconds. Favourites such as Mario Deslauriers, Jay Hayes, Frankie Chesler, Ainsley Vince, Leslie Burr Howard, Laurie Bucci, and Kimberley Farlinger, to name but a few, answered the call, but it was difficult to guess at who would win.

A few combinations, such as the doubles before and after the water jump, proved particularly difficult. American rider Kelly Soleau was eliminated after her horse fell at the third jump. Canadian rider Eliott Stone was unable to finish the course after his horse refused two jumps. Kelley Small was also eliminated after a fall. Twenty-four year old Ontario native Keean White, member of the Canadian equestrian team, was the first to manage a clear round. A few minutes later, it was Elissa Reisman’s turn to do the same. Alberta native Jennifer Serek followed suit and also earned her place at the jump-off. Expectations were high when Canadian equestrian team member Beth Underhill and her horse Magdaline entered the ring and sure enough, the couple came through with a clear round. The crowd went wild as the 20th rider, none other than local boy Mario Deslauriers, made his entry. Then, it was complete silence up to the last jump as the pair made their way through the course - and to a clear round! Mario Deslauriers would be the fifth rider in the jump-off. Fans were ecstatic! Not only was he clear, he was also the fastest. Hopes were high!

Course designer Pierre Jolicoeur favoured speed to technical difficulty for the suspense-filled jump-off. First to go, Keean White rode clear and stopped the clock at 41’46. Alberta rider Jennifer Serek, 3rd rider to go set the time to beat at 38’62! Beth Underhill and Magdaline were menacing but finished in 40’47. Fans again went wild as Mario Deslauriers, last rider to participate in the jump-off, entered the ring. Seemingly effortlessly, he jumped to victory with an incredible time of 38’19!

After a spectacular win at the BonjourQuebec.com Grand-Prix last Sunday, Mario Deslauriers is the clear winner of this 32e edition of L’International Bromont presented by CN. Spirits were high at the Bromont Olympic Horse Park as the 10,000 spectators left the venue.

The two-week International Bromont presented by CN was a resounding success. It’s “mission accomplished” for a very satisfied Roger Deslauriers who underlined the important role played by the sponsors, and more specifically of the events key sponsor CN. It is thanks to them, that it is possible to offer considerable prizes and therefore to attract the riders that make the event so spectacular. The organizers extend an invitation to fans and enthusiasts for the 33rd edition of L’International Bromont.
