ST. LAURENT PUTS ON ITS SUNDAY BEST LE CHÊNE VERT

2007-08-16, from Member
COMPTON, Quebec, August 15, 2007 – On Sunday, August 26, 2007, Louis S. St. Laurent National Historic Site of Canada will be playing host to the musical group Le Chêne Vert. Twice that afternoon, at 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., the group will regale their audience with timeless pieces from the Celtic musical traditions of Ireland, Brittany, Galicia and the Shetland Islands.

All four members of the group – François Pellerin (Celtic flute, low and soprano tin whistles, and Irish bagpipe), Julie-Odile Gauthier-Morin (cello), Lise Beauchemin (fiddle and piano) and André Simoneau (guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, hammer dulcimer, darbouka/doumbek, bodhrán and “bones/spoons”) – hail from the Eastern Townships.

A show by Le Chêne Vert is always a unique experience, for the group not only draws on its beloved repertoire of numbers from Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, Galicia and Quebec, but also performs them according to their own original arrangements bearing Middle Eastern, classical, jazz and modern touches. Visitors are thus treated to a diversity of rhythms and a broad gamut of Celtic-inflected genres, ranging from melancholy laments to feverish reels and on to more light-hearted ballads.

Visitors are invited to take full advantage of this special day to picnic in the St. Laurent family’s lovely garden. It is also worth noting that Louis. S. St. Laurent National Historic Site’s program of summer activities will continue on until Sunday, September 2, 2007. All activities will be held as scheduled, come rain or come shine. For further details, please visit the national historic site’s Website at www.pc.gc.ca/st-laurent.
This year marking the 25th anniversary of its opening, Louis S. St. Laurent National Historic Site of Canada is open to the public every day, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. As visitors tour the childhood home and family-run general store of this former Prime Minister of Canada (1948-1957), they will be given a glimpse into the rural/small town customs and lifestyles of the early 20th century. Likewise, they will be treated to a multimedia show narrating a century of Canadian history.
