Manoir Hovey’s Roland Ménard takes the gold at Gold Medal Plates cooking competition

Montréal, November 14, 2007 – Roland Ménard, executive chef at Manoir Hovey, the five-star inn and restaurant in North Hatley, Québec, won the gold at last night’s Gold Medal Plates cooking competition, held at the Bonsecours Market in Montréal. Beating other highly-rated chefs like Laurent Godbout of Chez l’Épicier and Daren Bergeron of Decca 77, he wowed judges Julian Armstrong of Montréal’s The Gazette and Robert Beauchemin, food critic at La Presse with his huckleberry candy with liquid apple filling and foie gras foam. Mario Navarrete, chef and owner of Raza and Madre restaurants in Montréal took the silver.

“I couldn’t be happier to have won the gold, and I think it shows people that we’re doing some very fine cooking in the Eastern Townships region”, says Ménard. He underlines that it was only possible to come out on top thanks to a strong team: chefs Francis Wolf and Antoine Rheault, also of Manoir Hovey, provided precious help as they rushed to serve more than 500 samples of their creation to atendees (the judges were mixed in the crowd and tasted each dish anonymously).

Gold Medal Plates is a culinary competition being staged in seven major Canadian cities. The top chefs from each city, selected by a national and regional panel of judges, have been competing in each city for the honour of being the Gold Medal Plates champion for 2007. Chef Roland Ménard, along with the winners at the other cities will go on to compete at the Gold Medal Plates Finale - The Canadian Culinary Championship – which will take place in February 2008. The winner will then be crowned the top chef in Canada.

Founded in 2003, Gold Medal Plates aims to raise substantial funds for Canada's high performance athletes. Proceeds from the Gold Medal Plates competitions and accompanying auctions will be donated to the Canadian Olympic Foundation to benefit two unprecedented sport initiatives: Own the Podium 2010, which supports targeted Olympic and Paralympic winter athletes, and Road to Excellence, which supports targeted Olympic and Paralympic summer athletes.
