Two new exhibitions at Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke

Sherbrooke, Tuesday, March 18, 2008 -  At last, spring is here and the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke is renewing its programming by presenting two new exhibitions, to be officially inaugurated April 12 next. The common link of the two events is the pioneering personalities of the artists: Madame Thérèse Lecomte, the first art teacher hired by the Commission scolaire de Sherbrooke, who put together the teaching curriculum and trained many now eminent artists, and Serge Lemoyne, who by his social commitments, showed a new way to relate to the public for a whole generation of artists.

Salut Lemoyne!
From March 29 to June 1, 2008

This exhibition was developed by François Gauthier, curator of the exhibition, to mark the tenth anniversary of the artist’s death. He describes Serge Lemoyne as a pillar of the visual arts world during the 1960s and 1970s, and he remains today a major figure in Québec art. The Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke has every reason to celebrate him as well: he was born in Acton Vale and the museum collection boasts a number of his works. The idea of honouring Serge Lemoyne with an exhibition that would unite his works with those of his friends was received with enthusiasm by these artists. The exhibition covers nearly 50 years of painting, from 1960 through 2000, allowing us to follow the artistic development of each of the participants: Armand Vaillancourt, Pierre Gauvreau, Janine Carreau, Hélène Goulet, Reynald Connolly, Cozic, François Gauthier, Gilles Boisvert, and Serge Tousignant.

Thérèse Lecomte, pionnière et professeure.
From April 5 to May 25, 2008

During her long life as a teacher, Thérèse Lecomte was an inspiration and a model for many children, some of whom would go on to develop exceptional talent: Michel Goulet and Maurice Savoie, Prix paul-Émile-Borduas and Clémence Desrochers, among them. But she is also to be recognized as an artist of diverse abilities and interests, who over more than 40 years became an iconic figure in the Eastern Townships art world. Now aged 92, she has generously donated her personal collection to the Musée. Through the present exhibition of her paintings, drawings and sculptures, the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke and the people of the City of Sherbrooke and the region, are now able to pay tribute to her talent and her exceptional contribution to art education.

The Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke, 241 Dufferin Street, is open Tuesday to Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m. Entrance fees : $7,50, adult, $6, senior, $5, student. Guided tours in French every Tuesday at 2 p.m. English tours and group tours available anytime upon reservation. The Musée is supported by the Ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine du Quéabec and Ville de Sherbrooke.
