Tom Hopkins. Traversing the Visible at the MBAS

Sherbrooke, Tuesday, May 27, 2008 - This summer, the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke presents an exhibition comprising some 20 works by Montreal artist Tom Hopkins who has lived and worked in Montreal and in the Eastern Townships for more than 30 years. Traversing the Visible will be shown from June 7 to October 6 and the artist will be attending opening ceremonies at 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 7.

The Exhibition

Traversing the Visible constitutes the first solo showing of Tom Hopkins’ work in Quebec’s Eastern Townships and covers the last fifteen years of his production. Tom Hopkins describes his work in the following terms: “For me, tension is the basis for all life. Certainly tension between two or three colours in a painting is what makes the painting vibrant. All contrasts – warm-cold, broad areas against detail, organic against mechanical create this tension. And of course, in many of my paintings I am interested in the wild versus the tame.” With this new exhibition Tom Hopkins invites us on a fantasy voyage to an imaginary country, where a relatively peaceful landscape conceals many underlying tensions. A figurative painter, Tom Hopkins creates a dialogue between the artist and his subject, between the work and its viewer. We are struck as much by what emanates from the painting as by the image itself. It is as though we were entering a private space, a waking dream, where everything is possible. Invited to traverse the Visible, we find ourselves on the other side of the mirror, inside the consciousness of the artist.
