Chosen Works from Collection Loto-Québec

Sherbrooke, 21 October 2008 : The Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke presents, starting 24 October, Œuvres choisies de la Collection Loto-Québec. Opening ceremonies will take place on Saturday 25 October at 5 p.m. The curator of the collection, Mr. Louis Pelletier, will be attending. The exhibition will be shown until 4 January 2009.

The collection : In 1979, Loto-Québec embarked on a mission to stimulate the visual arts in Québec by means of an acquisition program focusing on contemporary art. Some 29 years later, La Collection Loto-Québec and its 4,000 works of art by 975 Québec artists represent an important link in Québec's artistic heritage. Each year, some 200 new works of art are acquired to further enrich the Collection. Today, La Collection Loto-Québec is pursuing its mission while increasing the exposure of its works through Espace Création and exhibition tours throughout the province.

The exhibition : The Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke is proud to celebrate the creativity of Québec artists, as well as 30 years of judicious accumulation of art works, by hosting this exhibition of works from the prestigious Loto-Québec collection. Close to 100 years of Québec art is represented here: 34 artists, 43 works, with techniques ranging from painting, sculpture and printmaking, to photography and mixed media. In selecting the works to be shown in this exhibition, the Curator of the Collection and the Director and Curator of the Musée des beaux-arts have chosen boldly-coloured pieces where nature is omnipresent and man and animal largely absent. The elements Earth, Air, Fire and Water are evoked as much by the media used by the artists as by the images created; together the works present a diverse and eclectic representation of Québec’s artistic achievements in the 20th Century.

The artists presented in the current exhibition are: Carl Daoust, Kittie Bruneau, Francine Simonin, Michèle Drouin, Marc-Aurèle De Foy Suzor-Coté, Yves Boucher, Léon Bellefleur, Guido Molinari, Jérôme Fortin, Élyse De Lafontaine, Marc-Aurèle Fortin, Danièle Bergeron, Lucien Lisabelle, Arnold Zageris, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Alfred Pellan, Aline Martineau, François Vincent, David Altmejd, Josette Villeneuve, Pascale Poulin, Frédéric Back, Carol Bernier, Christine Mattia, Éric Lamontagne, Denis Farley, Robert Wolfe, Fernand Leduc, Julie St-Amand, Guy Laramée, Don Darby, René Derouin et Jacques Hurtubise.

Please note: Thanks to a partnership agreement between the Collection Loto-Québec and the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke, visitors will have access without charge to this exhibition during this period.
