Chantal Lagacé. Plan B

2008-10-21, from Member
Sherbrooke, Tuesday 21 October, 2008. The Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke presents from 21 October Plan B, an exhibition by Sherbrooke artist Chantal Lagacé. Opening ceremonies will take place on Saturday 25 October at 5 p.m., Ms Lagacé attending. The exhibition is presented until 25 January 2009.

The exhibition: For many years, Chantal Lagacé has walked through cities. She has walked through her own city, Sherbrooke, as a farmer walks the bounds of his land, or a deer his territory in the forest. Walking our territory responds to a primal need – that of identifying with a place, of leaving a trace of our presence here. This idea motivates the artist who speaks to us through this exhibition. She makes use of different techniques – painting, photography, collage, grouping of objects – to examine urban areas, the traces of the past and the present, places of memory, the loss of landmarks and the appearance of new markers.

Biography: Chantal Lagacé lives and works in Sherbrooke. She graduated from Université Laval in 1986, majoring in arts, and founded Regart, an artist cooperative. In 1990, she holds her first solo exhibition and is invited to work at Ateliers Les Arts Verts de Melun-Sénart, a suburb of Paris. She exhibits regularly in group shows and creates different art projects integrated to architecture in Québec and in Gaspésie. Back in Sherbrooke in 1995, she becomes assistant to the Director of the Fête du lac des Nations. And in 2001, she is back at l’UQAM, graduating with a masters degree in design and organization of cultural events.

The Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke, 241 Dufferin Street, is open Tuesday to Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m. Entrance fees : $7,50, adult, $6, senior, $5, student. Guided tours in French every Tuesday at 2 p.m. English tours and group tours available anytime upon reservation. The Musée is supported by the Ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine du Québec and Ville de Sherbrooke.
