The Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke, the Museum’s Foundation,
and the Placements Culture programme – a winning combination!

Sherbrooke, Tuesday 14 November 2006: The Director of the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke, Ms. Cécile Gélinas, today expressed her gratitude to the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, for its generous support of the Musée’s fundraising campaign through the Placements Culture programme. This initiative, established by the Minister of Culture and Communications for the benefit of cultural organizations, provides matching funding for amounts raised, and could result in a maximum donation in governmental funds of $225,000 for the Musée. Members of the Board of the Musée, the Board of its Foundation, members of the Campaign Cabinet, and representatives of the cultural and business community of Sherbrooke were on hand for the announcement.

Mr. André Dugré, of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, described the purpose of the Placements Culture programme, noting that it had been received with great enthusiasm by the cultural community of Québec. A major goal of the programme is to encourage private individuals and businesses to contribute towards the well-being of cultural organizations in their region. In the case of the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke, each dollar received in donation will be matched by $1.50 from the programme, to be added to the museum’s endowment fund.

The Honorable Raymond C. Setlakwe, Chair of the Campaign Cabinet, said “When one accepts the chairmanship of a major fundraising campaign, it is because one is firmly convinced of the importance of the cause. I can say with confidence that the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke as a cultural institution is essential to the well-being of the citizens of our city and of the whole region of the Eastern Townships.” Mr. Setlakwe noted that most of the major gifts to the campaign have come from metropolitan Montreal. He called upon the Sherbrooke business community to demonstrate its commitment and generosity by contributing the $150,000 necessary for the Musée to realize the maximum governmental contribution possible.

The President of the museum’s Board of Directors, Ms. Ann Montgomery, emphasized that in order to be eligible for the matching grant from Placements Culture, donations must be received before October 2007, and she expressed her appreciation of this initiative which will help to ensure the long-term financial health of the Musée.

The Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke and its Foundation intend to contribute a total of $150,000 to the endowment fund, and thereby ensure the payment of an additional $225,000 in matching funds from Placements Culture.
