New baby at Granby Zoo

Granby, February 27 – The Granby Zoo gets a new addition with the birth Saturday night of a Goeldi’s monkey. Parents and baby are doing well and are visible to visitors – but Baby is carried on Mom’s back and may be hard to distinguish amongst all her long black fur.

“This is a birth we were hoping for ever since the couple came here. As soon as the female was introduced to the male, zookeepers noted they were getting along very well. They had made a nest inside a hollow log. It is only during morning cleaning on Sunday that the keeper noticed the newborn clinging to its mother’s back” said Alain Fafard, Director of Animal Care.

The father was born on February 20, 2002 at the Frankfurt Zoo in Germany. Upon arrival in North America, he was quarantined at the Montreal Biodome, and spent a few months there before being transferred to the Quebec Zoological Garden. The Granby Zoo became its new home on October 26, 2006. However, he does still belong to the Biodome, as does his mate, who was born there on July 7, 2002. She arrived at the Granby Zoo on December 7, 2007, after spending some time at the Cherry Brook Zoo (St. John, New Brunswick).

“This birth is good news, because the father’s genes are very rare in the North American population of these monkeys” explains Chantal Routhier, Responsible for Terrestrial Collections at the Montreal Biodome and coordinator for the Goeldi’s monkey Species Survival Plan (SSP) in Canada.

With its black fur, the Goeldi’s monkey looks like a small gorilla. This little South American primate is found in the upper Amazonian basin. The female gives birth to only one young at a time. An adult Goeldi’s monkey measures 21.6 to 23.2 cm excluding the tail, which is between 25,5 and 32,4 cm long. The average weight is 490 g (400-535 g) for an adult; 50 g (30-60 g) for a newborn.

Mostly tree-dwelling, Goeldi’s monkeys eat leaves and fruits. They spend most of their time less than 5 m above ground, which allows them to evade raptors, their main predator. In captivity, life expectancy for this species is around 18 years.

The Goeldi’s monkey is one of 23 threatened species for which the Granby Zoo receives recommendations from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plans. Thanks to these plans, several Canadian institutions, such as the Granby Zoo and the Montreal Biodome, are working together to ensure survival and long-term genetic diversity of threatened species like the Goeldi’s monkey.
