Pierre Chénier. Dissemblance

Sherbrooke, Tuesday 3 March, 2009 - The Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke presents from 14 March, Dissemblance, an exhibition by Sherbrooke artist Pierre Chénier. Opening ceremonies will take place on Saturday 21 March at 5 p.m., in the presence of Mr Chénier. The exhibition continues until 24 May 2009.

The exhibition: Painting which seeks to confront, to strike the eye, to disturb and touch it – the artist chooses these words to describe his artistic endeavour. For more than thirty years, he has studied the notion of time, a difficult and inexhaustible subject. Is it his training as an historian, his archaeological experience, his interest in science which leads him to question the essence of time and its corollary, memory? Modern science has curved our notion of linear time, confusing our understanding, raising more questions but providing few answers.

Using the media of canvas, plaster, resin, ink, walnut stain, lacquer, and with his drawings evoking mineral and organic themes, Pierre Chénier investigates elements seemingly forgotten by time. We are reminded of the graffiti on the Berlin Wall, in the ruins of Pompeii, on the worn frescoes of Della Francesca. This is the heart of Chénier: a work partly hidden, but which still provides viewers with a living image, open to interpretation, and which invites them to take the work further, to remake the image. In this, Pierre Chénier’s work is completely of the present time.

Biography: After receiving a university degree in history, Pierre Chénier worked many years as an archaeologist both in Quebec (for the Canadian Government) and in Carthage, Tunisia (for UNESCO). His first major exhibitions took place in that time. This interest in history and archaeology is partially reflected in his canvases. Through painting, he wishes to arouse and provoke a reflection about one's sense of belonging and a place in time. Chénier tries to explain the seemingly opposed relationship between the physical versus the spiritual, and the fleeting versus the durable and lasting. Selected collections include the Canada Council of Arts, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Loto-Québec and Air Canada.

The Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke, 241 Dufferin Street, is open Tuesday to Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m. Entrance fees : $7,50, adult, $6, senior, $5, student.
