Spa Eastman Honoured for its Sustainable Development Program at Eastern Townships' Tourism Grands Prix Gala

Eastman, March 23, 2009 – Spa Eastman won Eastern Townships' Final of the Grands Prix du tourisme in "Sustainable Tourism" category. Spa Eastman received this honour last Friday at the Eastern Townships Tourism Association's gala.

Mr. Gérard Marinovich, Spa Eastman's Vice-president, received the Grand Prix from Quebec's Minister of Tourism, Mrs Nicole Ménard. Mr. Marinovich said he was proud of this honour: "Not only does it rewards our actions but it also celebrates our fundamental values".

Spa Eastman is a leader in the field because of its mission and role as a promoter of sustainable health. Since its opening 32 years ago, Spa Eastman has developed a preventive approach that stands out as much in Quebec as it does internationally. "The challenge of sustainable development now goes far beyond organic gardening. In the last few years, our management and operations has been closely examined. As a result, several changes have been implemented and we are especially committed to pursuing these efforts to lessen our ecological footprint" says Vice-President Marinovich.

Spa Eastman’s waste management program diverts over 23 metric tons from landfills, which represents an 81% recycling rate. The implementation of the 3RV (reduction, reinvestment, recycling & validation) is done systematically and the results are two-fold. Spa Eastman has always paid particular attention to where food products come from: most of the products used are organic and the gardens provide the kitchen with fine herbs, edible flowers, sprouts, vegetables and berries.

In 2008, Spa Eastman won the prestigious Phenix (Environment Grand Prix) in the Sustainable Development category. It was among the ten first hotels to participate voluntarily in the Programme de reconnaissance en développement durable (a sustainable development recognition program), in association with Quebec Hotels Association. The program, now known as Réser-Vert, proposes a constant evolution towards the achievement of balance in environmental, social and economic issues. It is based on 140 specific actions and has 24 objectives linked to sustainable development: greenhouse gas reduction, reinvestment, community, ethics and economic development.

Spa Eastman and Sustainable Development: A Natural Alliance!

Founded in 1977, Spa Eastman was already a forerunner because of its organic business and responsible health concept. Thirty years later, it is internationally recognised for its commitment to promoting sound life habits in order to improve clients’ overall, long-lasting health. It’s an original and unique facet of sustainable development.
