2009-05-19, from Member

Valcourt, May 19, 2009 – The Yvonne L. Bombardier Cultural Centre is proud to present an exhibit entitled DEBERDT 30 ans de CRÉATION (DEBERT – 30 years of CREATION) which runs from May 25 to September 6, 2009. A stunning retrospective, showcasing three decades of the work of brilliant Eastern Townships artist Christian Deberdt, this is one cultural attraction that you certainly won’t want to miss!

A three-dimensional painting that mixes fantasy with reality

« Deberdtienne » paintings feature geometric landscapes that plunge viewers into surroundings that seem familiar and yet alien, transporting them into a dream world. The artist has the knack of combining fantasy and reality in three dimensions and the overwhelming effects of light are fundamental to the way that he composes his paintings. His distinctive style and simple themes are inspired by nature. Mountains, trees, lakes and rivers, rocks and flowers, are turned into stylised images, dominated by harmonious colors. « Deberdtienne » works have been shown around Canada and the United States and they can be found among some of the more prestigious private and public collections.

His artistic journey from France to Quebec

Born in Paris in 1947, Christian Deberdt first studied printing and the graphic arts, then worked on the popular comic strip « Astérix » as well as several artbooks. In 1968, he settled in Montreal. From 1968 to 1975, his work took him across Canada and the United States and during these years he became more and more interested in painting. From 1976 onwards, the artist devoted himself entirely to his art, working meticulously in acryclic or with colored pencils. In 1981, Deberdt moved to the Eastern Townships, where he met his current partner. She had three children and they married in 1996. That transformed his personal life, as well as the way that he approached his painting. His landscapes now have a transitory dimension, interesting characters inhabit his work, as do the activities of human beings, in the heart of nature.
