2009-05-28, from Member
Sutton, May 28th, 2009 - Festival coordinator Michael Hynes announced the lineup of events for the Sutton, Québec Multi Media Festival today. Beginning on Thursday July 23rd and running through August 23rd, with 24 events at various venues around Sutton QC., this year’s festival focuses on the fusion of music and various other mediums. In collaboration with Mode Records (New York City), the Coeur du Village and the United Church (Sutton) and various independent artists like Tim Chu (New York) and Henning Lohner (Berlin), this year’s festival has a truly international flavor. There will be several World Premieres of new films.

The festival has 4 main themes.

Wednesdays and Sundays – Music and Words
7 evenings, beginning July 26th, of explorations into the fusion words and music in free Improvisation. Artists such Tony Whedon (Burlington, Vt.) as well as local authors and poets join Michael Hynes in an underground café approach to performance.

Thursdays and Fridays – Music in film
Drawing on Michael’s 11-year relationship with Mode records as well as his career on the international scene, 10 evenings of films will be presented at the Coeur du Village. Included will be films on John Cage (Berlin’s Henning Lohner’s Revenge of the Dead Indians ”), Iannis Xenakis (Kraanerg, the Sting Quartets) as well as independent film maker Tim Chu’s “Prelude to Parsifal” and “Adagio”, to mention a few. Tim Chu will be in attendance to present and discuss his films and approach to filmmaking.

Saturdays – Portraits in Music
5 concerts of music theatre will be presented, each featuring a different artist. From Charlie Mingus (featuring Montréal bassist Alex Bellegarde) to Miles Davis (featuring Sutton’s own Stanley Lake) to Tom Waits, Jimmy Van Huesen and Thelonius Monk, Michael is joined each night by Montréal drummer Isabelle Allard in exploring the lives of these giants through their musical styles

Wednesday to Sunday – Music in Art
Michael collaborates with Montréal artist Francois Brisson to create an installation exploring the creative process. One new painting will be presented in a meditative space, which will include an electro-acoustic soundtrack, sketches, and materials that deconstruct the process of the painting’s evolution.

“I am thrilled about how things came together this year” – says Hynes. “ I am looking forward to presenting a festival highlighting art that might not otherwise find its way to Sutton. The intersection of my work and associations outside of Canada with my artistic life here in Sutton and the Montréal region is especially pleasing”,
