AUBERGE COMMISSIONS ARTIST TO CELEBRATE 160TH ANNIVERSARY

2009-07-30, from Member

KNOWLTON, QC. -1849 was an auspicious year in Quebec.

The Montreal Annexation Manifesto was published calling for Canada's annexation by the United States. It was even signed by Paul Holland Knowlton, the namesake of the village of Knowlton. The Rebellion Losses Bill was enacted causing the Montreal Riots and culminating in the burning of the Parliament building that was then in Montreal
And in sleepy Knowlton, Auberge Knowlton was built under the name of Blinn’s Inn.
Much has changed in 160 years and much has not. Still operating and offering lodging and food to weary travellers who now arrive by car or bus rather than by Mr. Pickle’s trusty stagecoach, Auberge Knowlton has modernized while keeping the cachet that has kept it in good stead for oh-so-many decades.

To celebrate this auspicious and important anniversary, the Auberge owners
commissioned well-known Eastern Townships artist Marie-Andree Leblond to create
a mural for the hotel’s restaurant, Le Relais. The 5 ft.X 8 ft. mural, executed in acrylics,
has fun with the fact that Le Relais has a long history of serving Brome Lake duck.
Entitled the “Revenge of the Ducks”, the painting depicts the restaurant Le Relais
in the Auberge but in place of people, the ducks have taken over…Brome Lake ducks,
of course. Ms. Leblond is represented by the Galerie Knowlton in Knowlton.

The artwork also gives a nod to the art galleries and various events in the village, namely The Knowlton Music Festival, Letters from Knowlton and the Duck Fest, with
a musician-duck, a painter-duck and a letter-writing duck.

“Marie-Andree’s work is very special. She’s given a modern twist to a long-standing tradition, which is as it should be as the Auberge continues to lead in hotellerie in the area. And it’s funny. There are little twists and tweaks that the viewer won’t see initally, sort of like “Where’s Waldo”, says Signy Stephenson , owner of the Auberge with her husband Michel Gabereau. “We hope that people will love it as much as we do.”

Now a hotel with 12 tastefully decorated rooms, with all the amenities a modern traveller demands, Auberge Knowlton also boasts a 90-seat restaurant (Le Relais) with 60-seat summer terrace. The building also houses several boutiques and a real estate office.

“We see ourselves as guardians of a fascinating historic building that has always been
the center of village life,” says Stephenson. “There have been many owners since 1849, each adding their own particular cachet, each reacting to the demands of the times but each always with an eye on the past.”

The Sherbrooke Historical Society, in fact, honoured the building in 2002 in a photographic exposition showing different sites in the Eastern Townships and how they had changed or guarded their historical significance. As well, this year will see Auberge Knowlton highlighted on the “Townships Trail”, a route that takes visitors on an architectural and natural heritage trip through the Eastern Townships.

Notwithstanding being the oldest continuously operating hotel in the Eastern Townships, Auberge Knowlton has kept up with the times. It has been cited by Fodor’s Travel, a leading travel publisher in the U.S., as “Fodor’s Choice” yearly since 2006 and it is recommended by such travel heavyweights as Ulysses, Petit Futé and Lonely Planet.

It is member of Agricotours as an ”Auberge du Passant”, of VeloQuebec as an inn suited to the needs of cyclists and of the Brome Missisquoi Wine Route as a “Friend” that promotes and serves the excellent wines of the region. The Auberge is also a “Friend”
Of the new Townships Trail.
