Happiness is found in the orchard

It’s juicy, sweet, has an appealing colour and is ready to sink your teeth into. In the fall, when the air is cool and the trees begin to change colour, the scent of apples comes to mind thanks to their pleasant aroma and taste. The Eastern Townships enjoys a thriving apple industry: Au Cœur de la Pomme and Domaine Pinnacle in Frelighsburg, Au Paradis des Fruits and the Domaine de Dunham in Dunham, the Verger de la Colline in Sainte-Cécile-de-Milton, the Verger champêtre in Granby, the Verger familial C.R. in Magog, Abbaye de Saint-Benoît-du-Lac in Saint-Benoît-du-Lac and the Verger le Gros Pierre and Cidrerie Verger Ferland in Compton.

Happiness is found in the orchard… when we gather as a family in a magnificent country setting to pick and savour Quebec’s most widely eaten fruit. A chance to learn about apple growing, stroll the interpretation trails, enjoy a guided tour, wander among the apple trees, take a tractor ride, taste some cider, juice, pies, crêpes, jam, or stock up on these fall treats.

With rural landscapes as your backdrop, you can pick your apples to eat raw... or baked. Mmm! Smells like apple pie. And speaking of pie, the 33th edition of the Apple Pie Festival will be held on the grounds of the Missisquoi Museum on September 20. How about a little ice cream with that? That’s right! We’ll have that and more for this family celebration that will include a visit to the museum.

While the apple is being honoured in the Townships during this colourful season, the same can be said for all the other local products being harvested. On September 13, residents of Saint-Malo invite you to their Fête des récoltes, a harvest celebration that will not only feature local products, but also a country mass, an auction, a mechoui, and popular music.

Join in the fun and take part in the Comptonales on September 26 and 27, an award-winning event that earned the Lauréat national argent (provincial silver prize) at the 2012 Grands Prix du tourisme québécois. This gourmet outing features about 60 exhibitors and their locally made products. You can also discover eight destinations where local producers each welcome a chef who will create appetizers using regional products. The village of Compton will offer a unique festival atmosphere when the Festin des Grâces rounds out the Comptonales on October 8.
