The 2011 Comptonales

The Comptonales: A New Style of Market in the Country

What do opera singer Marie-Josée Lord, celebrated chef and owner of Auguste restaurant Danny St-Pierre, and former Prime Minister of Canada Louis S. St. Laurent all have in common? All three will be part of the Comptonales’ 6th edition this year. The first will launch the celebrations with an eclectic repertoire on September 23, at the Pavillon des arts et de la culture de Coaticook; the second will act as honorary president of the Virée gourmande (gourmet tour) taking place on September 24 and 25; and, last but not least, the third will be at the National Historic Site that bears his name in the village of Compton, where he was born, and where the Comptonales have taken root.

The Comptonales seeks to captivate and satisfy those who love to eat. You’ll arrive in our countryside to find pastoral landscapes with cows grazing in pastures, fields as far as the eye can see, and mountains rising in the distance. The Comptonales celebrate the know-how of Compton craftspeople and the fertile Coaticook River Valley with the theme Les yeux plus grands que la panse (your eyes are bigger than your stomach). How? Grab your basket, your camera, and follow me….

The Virée gourmande

About 60 agri-tourism artists and craftspeople will come together in a festive atmosphere in the village of Compton, as well as at nearby farms, orchards, cheese factories, processing boutiques, vegetable and horticultural gardens. On the menu: tasting our famous products and workshops that demonstrate our agricultural, culinary, and artistic know-how. From aperitif to dessert, sweet to savoury, innovative to classic – a world of flavours are waiting to be discovered!

Pico the clown will be on hand to amuse youngsters. Farm animals, buskers, games, and workshops are also on the program. In addition, local artists will exhibit their talents outdoors, adding a magical touch to the celebrations.

Snapping photos of our countryside… on the spot!

We are proud to share our beautiful countryside and, seeing as it is so photogenic, we’d like you to capture it in photographs. Take part in our contest, Croquez nos campagnes… sur le vif, for the chance to win some great prizes. Bring your camera and snap beautiful country images to your heart’s content.

The Comptonales will also be exposed in all its glory as part of a photo exhibit presented at St. James Church in the village of Compton.

The Festin des grâces

On October 2, eight chefs from the region will compete to offer you the Festin des grâces (feast of thanks), prepared using the region’s latest harvests. The photo contest winners will be revealed during the meal. Since the event is very popular, we suggest you reserve as soon as possible.

If Comptonales rhymes with autumnal… it’s because autumn in Compton has a taste all its own.
