Activities and gift ideas for Christmas

Enchantment and magic in our markets!

The winter landscape is donned in Christmas garb; the frenzy of the holiday season is absorbing the minds of kids of all ages, including adults; the desire to believe in Santa Claus is brightening our spirits, and a kind of magic is spreading without the need to know why. To help get us in the festive mood, many Christmas activities are being held, and among them, the Christmas market is a favourite.

First Christmas market in Sutton

At last – Sutton is launching its own Christmas market! Some are saying that it’s about time, given the creative energy that abounds there. Sutton has a penchant for adding a touch of originality to things, and its market intends to make an impression. From December 9 to 18, teepees, prospector tents, and log cabins will take the place of the traditional little cottages. Rather than being bunched all together, the structures will be set up at various sites from one end of the town core to the other. You’ll have an opportunity to travel through the village on a horse-drawn sled during a guided tour. Your Christmas presents will feature artisan creations and gourmet food products. As you make your purchases, you’ll be able to taste some of the products and attend free performances.

Sherbrooke in lights… and in celebration

During the holiday season, the Marché de la gare de Sherbrooke will reflect the magic of Christmas. The change in scene is breathtaking, in particular when you’re near the tallest Christmas tree in Canada with its 30 000 lights, located in the heart of an enchanted forest where a carrousel and tiny train for children have been set up. Whether you’re tempted to taste mulled wine; discover the flavourful products from the region’s agro-food producers; admire the creations of our artists and artisans; take part in cultural activities; buy your Christmas tree; or take the Orford Express train for a little gourmet treat, brunch or dinner, the market at the Marché de la gare is decked out in its finest to greet you. And remember that Santa Claus is expected to arrive at the Marché de la gare on November 27 at the end of a long parade.

At the Uplands Cultural and Heritage Centre, experience the season’s mirth by attending its Victorian Christmas tea or one of its concerts. The Bibliothèque Éva-Senécal library will be presenting its Christmas fantasies for youth; children and adults will be able to hear a wintry Christmas tale told by Petronella, storyteller from Productions Littorales, on December 10 and 11. The Société d’histoire de Sherbrooke is back with its exhibition Crèche de Noël, une tradition aux mille visages, presenting nativity scenes from around the world. Arts Fleurimont is again hosting its Christmas market November 26 and its fairyland Christmas tea on December 4.

From November 23 to 27, the 22nd edition of the Salon des métiers d’art de l’Estrie will be held in the Centre des foires de Sherbrooke. The agile hands and imaginative minds of our craftspeople will be evident in the items created from wood, textiles, glass, ceramics, pottery, and other materials that have taken the form of jewellery, clothing, furniture, sculptures, stained glass, etc. After the show and sale, you can complete your holiday shopping for unique items at the Boutique-galerie des métiers d’art located on Frontenac St. in Sherbrooke.

Elsewhere in the region, wonderful surprises await

In Waterville, the Chœurs de Noël will perform in four different churches on November 26 and 27, while on December 3, 4, 10, and 11 the Comptonales Old-Time Christmas Market will be back at Louis S. St. Laurent’s general store in Compton. While you stock up on locally produced items from the store’s stalls, village merchants will join in the festivities providing activities along the street.
The Savonnerie des Diligences is organizing Féérie de Noël, its first Christmas activity, continuing until December 23. About a dozen artisans will be exhibiting their products at this workshop/boutique in Eastman, offering you a great selection of gift ideas.

In Granby, the Centre d’interprétation de la nature du lac Boivin is turning its trails into a fairyland site where you can experience a Christmas story in the midst of nature on December 10.

Several special holiday packages are being offered by the region’s hotel keepers. Watch for our Christmas promotions – they’ll definitely put you in a holiday mood.
