What to do this weekend – June 22-24

As well as the festivities surrounding Quebec’s Fete natiionale, there are lots of other things going on this weekend. Gourmets, artists and sports aficionados – come and celebrate the first few days of summer!

The Fête nationale du Québec

This weekend, all over the region, Quebec’s national holiday (it commemorates John the Baptist) will be celebrated on June 23 and 24. There will be fireworks and live entertainment from groups such as Les Chiens de Ruelles (at Jacques Cartier Park in Sherbrooke) and Les Jack ¼ (in Sutton). To find out more about what’s going on, check the websites of local municipalities.

Poutine, poutine and more poutine…

Le Grand Poutinefest – a celebration of this iconic Quebec dish – is taking place this weekend in Sherbrooke. The line-up includes beer-poutine pairings, music, deejays, tastings, workshops and children’s games. You can even create your own poutine – the crazier the better! The Poutine Festival runs from June 21-25 on the campus of Sherbrooke University.

Le Festirib…finger lickin’ good!

June 22-24 marks the first edition of Festrib Mont Orford. This family-friendly event at the base of the mountain is festive, fun and finger lickin’ good! Entrance is free but foodies can opt for the ‘VIP experience’ – grilled spareribs (and other meats) served with two free beverages (6pm-8pm). For a stunning view of the surrounding countryside from the summit of Mont Orford, take the chairlift. It will be operating throughout the three days of the food fest.

CéraMystic returns

On June 22 (until July 1), CéraMystic, now in its 15th year, will once more be on the tourist agenda. This exhibition features the unique works of some 30 local ceramists from around Mystic in Saint-Ignace-de-Stanbridge. It’s well worth a detour! Mystic is one of the prettiest hamlets in the region.

Skateboarding fun in Farnham

SkateFest is a two-day event at Farnham’s skatepark where boarders will be showing off their (considerable!) skiils. To celebrate Skatefest’s 20th anniversary, festival organizers will be giving away several prizes, some in cash (up to a value of $700). What makes this event special is that the local youngsters, who are passionate about their sport, designed the skatepark themselves. Come and have fun and show them your support!
