Don’t miss these 12 free activities during the Journées de la culture!

September 27, 28 and 29 sees the return of Les Journées de la culture, during which a slew of free activities take place throughout the province of Quebec. Our region is part of these « days of cultural activities » and we’ve come up with 12 events that you really won’t want to miss! Time to mark your calendar….

Rivers of Light Festival – Lantern workshop (Sherbrooke)

Young and old are invited make their own lanterns during the festival Rivières en lumières (Rivers of Light Festival). Amid a carnival atmosphere with music and entertainment, the festival draws to a close on Saturday evening with a walk through downtown Sherbrooke, illuminated by these magical lanterns.

The world of art (Valcourt)

The Yvonne Bombardier Cultural Centre will be opening its doors on September 28, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the world of art. On the program – La Quincaillerie musicale (« Musical hardware ») an interactive activity during which participants fashion musical instruments from recycled materials (11am), a a collage workshop with artist Chloé Beaulac (12noon-2:30pm) and a guided visit with artist Luc Pallegoix who will explain his artistic approach (2:30pm).

Cocktail hour at CIAX 98,3 FM (Windsor)

Have you ever wanted a peek behind the scenes at a radio station? Well, this is your chance! All will be revealed during the cocktail hour (5pm-7pm) on September 27. As well as learning how programs are put together, you’ll be able to tour the studios, be treated to live entertainment and enjoy tastings of regional products. There will also be a draw. Don’t miss this opportunity to visit the most dynamic and eclectic community radio station in Windsor!

Alexandre Belliard – Les légendes d’un peuple (Lac Megantic)

Singer/songwriter Alexandre Belliard is bringing his acclaimed « Legends of a People » show to Lac Megantic on September 28 (8pm-11pm). His touching performance gives a glimpse into Quebec’s past, depicted through music and song. The audience will have the opportunity to meet Belliard after the show.

Sketching wild plants and other greenery (Georgeville)

Over the past couple of years, trees, plants and flowers have become favourite subjects for painters, probably because they are so beautiful! You too can try your hand at depicting the greenery that gives us such pleasure. On September 28 and 29 (10am-12noon), artist Nadia Nadège, who lives just outside the picturesque village of Georgeville, will be running a sketching workshop themed around botany - réalisation de croquis.

A self-guided walk along a « poetry trail » and the Musée-église (Saint-Venant-de-Paquette)

An audio guide leads you through this charming, heritage village along the 3-km Sentier poétique (« poetry trail ») which is dotted with 14 interpretative sculptures, showcasing the work of 60 poets (29 september – 10am-2pm). Wandering along this wooded path brings their work alive and it will tug at your heartstrings! A facilitator is onsite to offer you a delicious ice cream - an outing that’s a veritable treat for the body and mind.

Le filon (Sherbrooke)

On September 28 and 29 (12noon-5pm) Sherbrooke’s Museum of Fine Arts is inviting visitors to create a gigantic, collective work of art! While you’re there, don’t miss « Vibrato », a temporary exhibition featuring the late artist Marcel Barbeau or the Museum’s permanent collection. One of the enthusiastic, knowledgeable docents will be on hand to guide you.

Transparency – Verre de gris (Richmond)

The Verre de gris glass studio is opening its doors to the public for three days during an exhibition themed around glass (September 27, 28 and 29 – 11am-5pm). The studio is housed in a handsome heritage building where you can see the artisans at work, creating fused and thermofused glass and cutting and assembling this most beautiful of materials.

Guided tour themed around culture, history and agriculture (Compton)

Culture, history and agriculture are at the heart of a guided walk around the picturesque village of Compton. There are stops along the way at the Maison des arts Saint-Laurent, the Estelle-Bureau Library, the Lions Park and the Louis S. St-Laurent National Historic Site, birthplace of Canada’s 12th prime minister. (September 29 – 1:30pm-3:30pm) (Bibliothèque Estelle-Bureau, 29, chemin de Hatley, Compton – Reservations required)

A hub of horticulture and creativity (Ayer’s Cliff)

On September 27, 28 and 29 (10am-3pm) the prestigious Centre d’arts Rozynski is welcoming visitors with a three-in-one program – a wander through the extensive gardens of co-founder Wanda Rozynski who loved flowers and cacti, a meeting with multidisciplinary artist Pierre Leloup, who draws his inspiration from Japanese art, as well as the opportunity to watch Andrea Gilpin at work.

Le 186 pour la mémoire – a movie in memory of Félix Leclerc (Saint-Camille)

Le P’tit Bonheur de Saint-Camille is the ideal venue for a screening of Le 186 pour la mémoire, a movie featuring the iconic house in Vaudreuil where poet and singer/songwriter Félix Leclerc composed many of his masterpieces. And what better person to present it than his son and director of the movie, Martin Leclerc, who will treat the audience to stories about his famous father? If you’re a movie buff, you certainly won’t want to miss this event! (29 September – 3:30pm-7pm)

Transportation and technology (Valcourt)

If you like motorized vehicles and high-tech you’ll love spending the day at the Museum of Ingenuity J. Armand Bombardier on September 28 (11am-4pm). Throughout this special event, there will be a conference about BRP’s design philosophy and visitors will learn about a variety of different vehicles – from fire trucks to 10-wheelers – described by the people who drive them every day. Also included is an online game - À toute allure pour la nature - which, through biomimicry (an innovative technology inspired by nature) takes gamers on a virtual, breathtaking race across Canada.
