Lettres Biologiques, Amours Interdites

This event is over.
May 22, 2022

From 1933 to 1944, Brother Marie-Victorin and his colleague Marcelle Gauvreau, 22 years younger than him, maintained an ongoing correspondence, both scientific and amorous—and, by necessity, secret: he was a member of the Christian Brothers order, she was an unmarried woman. Between these two, both passionate about botany, an extraordinary relationship developed over the years. This epistolary relationship, platonic by choice—but perhaps a little more than that—takes us on a journey through a world of mutual admiration, tenderness, deep friendship and sublimated love. But also of biological description marked by scientific rigour, of unfettered research on human sexuality, and of reflections on sex education—all against the backdrop of a French Canada steeped in religion and under the thumb of the Catholic Church. Their beautifully written correspondence reveals glimpses of often thinly veiled amorous impulses. With Marika Lhoumeau and Yanick Villedieu.
