What to do this weekend – November 18-20

A festive, illuminated train, Christmas markets, locally made gifts... During this weekend in the Townships, the holiday season is already sprinkling its magic around the region. Here are some suggestions for ways to enjoy some activities and attractions in the lead-up to the festivities.

BTW if you’re looking for non-Christmassy things to do, we’ve got ideas for those as well!

Christmas markets and more…

The Christmas markets are in full swing all over the region! In addition to craftspeople selling their wares, there are attractions such as campfires (roast marshmallows anyone?) and gourmet food products to enhance your celebratory meals, not to mention great little gifts to stuff into your Christmas stockings. For further information, check out the schedule of the Townships’ Christmas markets.

The underground world of cave-dwelling organisms

A biospeleologist is a person who studies the ecosystem of caves and on November 19, one of those specialists will be on hand at the Lac Boivin Nature Interpretation Centre to explain the science behind this fascinating world - tales of underground expeditions, images of spectacular organisms and curious phenomena, explained in a language that lay people can understand. Visitors will learn a lot about Earth and life science - in particular the tiny creatures who inhabit the underground world.

Reservations must be made in advance. November 19 | 1:30pm-2 30pm| CINLB Exhibition Room| $15 (adults) and $7 for children

Choo-choo magic!

The famous Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) holiday train is back on track (pun intended!) and during a tour across North America, it will make three stops in the Eastern Townships - at Lac Megantic, Sherbrooks and Farnham. (Each stop lasts for 1 ½ hours.) The train’s exterior is decorated with colourful illuminations and (free) entertainment will be provided by Country & Western singer, Brittany Kennell and Metis musician/songwriter Don Amero. The idea behind the holiday train is to raise money for food banks at destinations along the way. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to celebrate the festive season and help people in need at the same time.

Please note that the train arrives on Thursday of next week (November 24) - not during this weekend!

November 24 | Lac Megantic - 12 noon | Sherbrooke - 4:45pm | Farnham - 8:55pm | Free of charge
