The townships in Five Senses - Isabelle Laflèche

The author of, among others, J’adore New York, J’adore Paris and J’adore Rome, lived in very busy urban environments before settling in the Town of Lake Brome, and, more recently, by making her home in Dunham. In these inspiring locations, she has found all the creative energy to bring the characters of her novels to life. This passionate adept of ethical lifestyles gives us her favourite locations to slow down for a while and indulge ourselves.

Smell. Bleu Lavande, in Fitch Bay, is where the author first takes us. “Their scent is particularly important for me, because, when I’m writing, I place essential oils of lavender in my aroma diffuser,” she explains. Besides lavender’s relaxing properties, she also loves to take some time to admire the beautiful landscapes and to enjoy the site activities. “It’s a very nice place for a romantic picnic or an outing among friends.”

Taste. For Isabelle Laflèche, it is simply impossible to resist the three-layered chocolate cake of the Auberge McGowan, in Georgeville, located near Magog. “It’s so huge, you can share it . . . or not!” She says. This peaceful place also offers a beautiful view of Lake Memphremagog.

Sight. There’s nothing like a cup of English tea to draw out memories of your own past and also those of the region. In Lennoxville, at the Uplands Community Centre, you can savour authentic English tea, served by their period attired staff. “I have a true vintage side to me, and I’m proud to acknowledge it! I love observing every little detail here, whether it’s the delicate finger food or the fancy ornate tea cups,” says the author. The centre is quite popular, therefore, we suggest that you reserve ahead of time.

Hearing. Isabelle Laflèche has a soft spot for the town of Frelighsburg. “I love the energy that flows from the area. Everybody is relaxed and many wonderful encounters can be made here.” She mentions, for instance, Flora Mama, an organic farm where they create country bouquets, and Oneka, where you’ll find many organic fine-quality products. But how does the sense of hearing fit in? “You must visit Beat et Betterave, a café where you’ll enjoy truly great musical performances.” Some examples? Martha Wainwright, Milk & Bone, Vincent Vallière!

Touch. Isabelle Laflèche loves to practise yoga, as much a spiritual activity as it is a physical one and which allows us to reconnect with our body and mind, notably through the sense of touch. She often attends Satya Studio’s yoga sessions (satya-yoga-sutton.com), in Sutton. “The studio is located in a town that I love, particularly for its shops and its relaxed atmosphere,” says the author.

Isabelle Laflèche is publishing her first youth novel, Bonjour Girl, with Éditions Hurtubise. Her novel talks about cyberbullying and the importance of promoting more diversity in the world of fashion and beauty. She writes a blog and a podcast that you can find by going to soulfulcouture.com. She also offers regular writing and creativity workshops.
