The Townships in Five Senses - Véronique Drouin

A native of Montreal, Véronique Drouin has lived in Sherbrooke for the last fifteen years. The author of the series Amblystone has us discover her favourite haunts.

Sight. For Véronique Drouin, there’s nothing more stunning than the summit of Mont-Orford, especially in autumn, when the leaves are so flamboyant. “Each year, it’s a pilgrimage to the top,” she explains. “Every autumn, the spectacular display of colours is a pure delight for our eyes.”

Taste. “There are so many choices! As I walk down Wellington Street North, in Sherbrooke, I have a lot of difficulty choosing a restaurant I love, there are so many interesting ones! If I have to name only one, it would be Auguste.” She appreciates—her son, who has been eating here since he was a small kid, as well—just as much their brunch menu as their evening one. “It’s truly a gastronomical version of comfort food, I just love the place,” she adds.

Smell. For this author, without a doubt it’s Savons des Cantons, in Magog. “I must admit, I have a weak spot for pretty soaps. I’ve known this shop since it first opened, and ever since, from time to time, I come here to fill up on their great soaps. I don’t have a favourite scent; although I remember this fig soap which particularly impressed me. Sadly, I don’t think they make it anymore.”

Hearing. Véronique Drouin, even though she isn’t a great amateur of ornithology, loves to head out to Bois Beckett Park, in Sherbrooke, and listen to all the birds sing. “Even if we’re in the middle of the city, inside this forest, the only thing we hear is the sound of the birds. It’s a well-kept secret for those who like to go for a quiet walk,” she adds.

Touch. At the Museum of Nature and Science in Sherbrooke, nothing is off limits … or almost! Located in the heart of downtown Sherbrooke, and overlooking the Magog River, the MNS2 has been a favourite spot for the author and her son when he was younger. “It’s the perfect place for children with a passion for discovering new things!”

Véronique Drouin is the author of the series Amblystone (Québec-Amérique). She has just completed a collaboration with a post-apocalyptic science-fiction book, À l’Est de l’Apocalypse, published by Les six brumes, a Sherbrooke publisher. In 2017, she received the Governor General’s award for her novel, L’importance de Mathilde Poisson. She is presently working on a series destined for teens which will be published by Les Éditions Les Malins.
