Je redécouvre le vélo en 2010 à la mi-cinquantaine grâce au message de vie d’un jeune dans la vingtaine qui combat un cancer. En solo ou en peloton avec le Club cycliste de Sherbrooke je roule 7000 km par saison de vélo dont 1600 km pour me rendre au travail. Depuis peu j’enfourche aussi un vélo dit ‘gravel bike’ pour le plaisir de rouler sur les routes en gravelle.
Le tour du lac Massawippi, environ 80 km. Un bon équilibre entre montées et plats, le paysage est magnifique et la route est belle. Et puis il y a ce trésor qui n’est plus très bien caché : le chemin Cochrane à Compton au coucher du soleil avec une vue imprenable sur la vallée de Coaticook.
D’abord les paysages. Comme on refait certains circuits, on sait qu’après certaines montées ou descentes on découvrira un paysage exceptionnel, c’est toujours un cadeau. Les dénivelés des Cantons ne sont pas comme ailleurs. Il existe un bel équilibre entre montées, descentes, vallons et plats. La diversité des itinéraires y est pour quelque chose. De plus, il existe plein de petites places gourmandes à découvrir le long du parcours.
La plupart de mes arrêts se font dans les Cafés de village parce qu’on est bien accueillis, c’est convivial et on mange souvent local. À Sutton, je m’arrête chez Le Cafetier; à Frelighsburg, aux Sucreries de l'Érable; à Compton à la Fromagerie de la Station ou à Que du Bonheur; à Dunham à la Brasserie Dunham; à Eastman au Café bistro les Trois Graces ; à Orford au Vélo café; à North Hatley chez Saveurs et gourmandises et à Danville à La Mante du carré.
Pour moi faire du vélo c’est une formidable occasion de bouger, de se dépasser et de rencontrer des gens passionnés. Quand je roule en solo, je suis face à moi-même et je suis seul pour affronter le vent ou pour décider de pousser un peu plus fort sur les pédales. Quand je roule en peloton, je ressens la synergie du groupe qui est comme un moment magique de partage et d’entraide. Il faut que tu sois très présent, très attentif car tu es collé sur le vélo de celui qui te précède. Finalement la pratique du vélo m’apporte l’expérience de l’effort déployé et la satisfaction du devoir accompli en toute simplicité.
Le 24 décembre 2015, une date mémorable. Une chaude journée d’hiver. J’ai enfourché mon vélo, il faisait beau. J’ai emprunté Spring road. Puis je me suis fait prendre par la pluie… avant que le soleil ne revienne. J’étais heureux.
Dans le cadre d’une série de capsules intitulées « Fous des Cantons » et diffusées sur ICI Radio-Canada Estrie au courant de l’été 2016, M. Alain Roy a partagé sa passion pour le vélo et les Cantons-de-l’Est.
