Catherine Magnan - I Am A Tree

This event is over.
Sep 14, 2025

From September 11 to October 12, 2025.

This unique project aims to unify my practice in naturalistic drawing with my desire to create works whose spatial presentation moves away from conventional framing, leaning more toward installation-based approaches.

In pursuit of experiencing art as a form of self-exploration, the common thread among the works created for this exhibition lies in their connection to outdoor settings. I engage in rituals that foster a deeper connection with the subtle energies of the forest—such as meditation—and immerse myself in its heart to refine my sensitive perception of the natural world and develop a renewed perspective on it.

It is with this mindset that I gathered a variety of natural elements to create the herbarium that forms the foundation of my visual representations.

"I Am a Tree" is the expression of an intimate relationship with nature through an inward journey.

- Vernissage on Sunday September 14 at 2 p.m.

Catherine Magnan is a multidisciplinary artist from Quebec. She completed her studies in visual and media arts in 2013 at Université Laval in Quebec City.

It was during this training that she discovered the many techniques of original printmaking. The endless combinations of processes and the accessibility offered by edition-based work led her to choose printmaking as her medium of choice.

She lived in Montreal for a few years before embarking on a long road trip through the Americas, all the way to Buenos Aires. During this journey, the limited access to equipment and materials required for printmaking prompted her to turn to—and rediscover—graphite and India ink drawing. From then until 2018, her practice was confined to her sketchbook.

She later settled in Quito, Ecuador, where she lived for over three years before returning to Quebec in 2021. There, she continues to create works inspired by her experiences and the environments she inhabits, while also developing her expertise as a cultural worker.

Her work has been exhibited in Quebec City, Montreal, Sherbrooke, Rimouski, Danville, Val-des-Sources, St-Charles-Borromée, Mont-Saint-Hilaire, as well as in Ecuador.
