What to do this weekend – July 1-3

Like to know what’s happening in the Eastern Townships this weekend? Take a look.

Celebrate Canada Day

There’s a fun program taking place on July 1 at Sherbrooke’s Jacques Cartier Park. Celebrate Canada Day with inflatable games, snacks from the food trucks and face painting (and other activities) for kids. There’s evening entertainment as well, featuring Noize (7pm) and Angel Forrest and guests (9pm).

For the love of coffee…..

The very first edition of Café Fest de Sherbrooke – a celebration of all things coffee – is being launched on July 2. There are two venues for the coffee festival - Café Géogène (538 King St. East) and Placette de l’Est, which is right next door. As well as food (and, of course, coffee), attendees can enjoy tastings, watch demos performed by guest roasters, listen to a panel discussion about coffee and wonder at the intricacy of latte art – all in a great celebratory atmosphere.

Birdwatching by boat

Back by popular demand, the Marais de la Rivière-aux-Cerises is once again organizing guided outings by kayak to observe the local birds. On July 2 and 9, participants can set out at sunrise and paddle across the wetlands, accompanied by a biologist and an ornithologist.

Reservations are essential. Call: (819) 843-8118.

A feast for the eyes of art lovers…

This weekend marks the start of not one, but two, ‘must-see’ art-oriented summer events in the Townships.

First, head to Way’s Mills… The Rozynski Art Center is the site of Ceramystic, an open-air ceramic exhibition and sale. More than 30 contemporary ceramists take part in this prestigious, annual show and visitors can attend workshops and demonstrations (July 1-10).

Next, it's off to the Magog area to follow the Circuit des arts Memphrémagog, a studio tour that runs from July 2-10. The tour starts at the collective exhibition in the Visual Arts Centre in Magog, then meanders around the surrounding countryside, with stops at the studios of participating artists.
