Traverser la ville de Sherbrooke en kayak? Eh oui, c'est possible! Grâce au Corridor Bleu sur la rivière Saint-François, j'ai pu traverser la ville à bord de mon kayak en compagnie de l'Amoureux et de mes parents. Nous y avons découvert un parcours qui offre une perspective tout autre de la ville de Sherbrooke.

La journée s'annonce chaude et c'est tant mieux, puisqu'il n'y a pas de meilleur endroit que sur l'eau pour passer une telle journée! Le plan du jour? Suivre le courant de la rivière Saint-François sur une distance de 16 km en partant du parc Optimist dans l'arrondissement de Lennoxville où stationnement et rampe de mise à l'eau sont aménagés.
Au premier abord, on pourrait penser que le parcours est très urbain (après tout, on passe en plein cœur de la ville!) mais étonnement, il y a beaucoup de verdure et de nature. Sur les premiers kilomètres de descente, les berges sont boisées et, outre un léger bruit de circulation automobile, c'est le calme qui règne. On aperçoit même deux chevreuils sur la rive.
Les derniers jours ayant été chauds et secs, le débit d'eau est peu élevé. Le courant est juste assez fort pour pagayer sans effort tout en conservant une bonne vitesse. Après environ quatre kilomètres, nous arrivons dans la section la plus urbaine du parcours et passons sous un pont ferroviaire et quelques viaducs. De la rivière, on aperçoit bien la Cathédrale Saint-Michel et une partie du centre-ville. On profite de l'île des Soeurs (à ne pas confondre avec celle au sud de Montréal!) pour mettre le pied à terre et faire une pause.
En continuant notre balade, nous croisons la rivière Magog qui se jette dans la Saint-François et, un peu plus loin, le Mena'sen, un rocher orné d'une croix au milieu de la rivière, qui, selon une vieille légende, serait le mémorial d'un combat singulier entre un Iroquois et un Abénaquis.
La deuxième moitié du parcours nous plonge en territoire plus sauvage. On aperçoit d'ailleurs plusieurs espèces d'oiseaux dont un aigle à tête blanche et plus d'une dizaine de hérons. Un véritable paradis pour les amateurs d'ornithologie!
Notre aventure se termine à la Maison des arts et de la culture de Brompton où un quai a été installé pour faciliter la sortie de l'eau. La descente nous aura pris 4 h 15 en mode très relax et en incluant quelques petites pauses.
