Le vélo de montagne a longtemps traîné une image de sport extrême, réservé aux casse-cous prêts à tout pour une dose d’adrénaline. Contrairement à ce qu’on pourrait croire, c’est avant tout une communion privilégiée avec la nature, un entraînement physique complet et, surtout, un plaisir accessible à quiconque sait tenir en équilibre sur deux roues. C'est aussi une activité où l'on peut progresser continuellement !
Si vous habitez ou visitez les Cantons-de-l’Est, vous êtes au cœur du paradis québécois de la garnotte, des roches et des racines! Voici comment transformer votre curiosité en passion, en vous appuyant sur les conseils d'experts comme ceux de Vélo Québec.
La première règle d'or ? Ne brûlez pas les étapes. En vélo de montagne, la technique prime sur la forme physique brute. C'est pourquoi il est important de commencer par :

La meilleure façon de débuter est de s'inscrire à une leçon. Voici cinq endroits où vous pourrez réserver un cours dans les Cantons :

Commencez par les sentiers de type "flow" (fluides et larges), qui sont aménagés à la machine et dont la surface a peu de texture, plutôt que les sentiers "techniques", qui sont plus naturels, maculés de roches et racines. Repérez les pastilles vertes sur les cartes. Comme le rappelle Vélo Québec, il est essentiel de respecter la signalisation pour votre sécurité, ainsi que toujours y aller mollo lors de votre première fois dans un nouveau sentier, le temps de l’apprivoiser.
Inutile d'acheter un vélo à 5 000 $ pour votre première sortie ! La location est la meilleure idée pour tester les différents types de cadres et préciser vos besoins.

Pour débuter, un vélo "Hardtail" (pourvu d’une suspension à l’avant seulement) est excellent pour apprendre à choisir ses trajectoires. Un vélo "Full Suspension" (doté d’une suspension à l’avant et l’arrière) pardonnera davantage vos erreurs. Choisissez votre vélo selon la pratique recherchée.

Une chute à basse vitesse peut gâcher une journée. De bons gants et des genouillères légères sont des investissements judicieux. Vous ne vous y retrouvez pas ? Voici quelques informations pour vous aider dans votre choix.
