Véronique Buist - Matière Refuge

This event is over.
Apr 19, 2025 ~ Sep 1, 2025

Véronique Buist is a fiber artist whose preferred means of expression is handmade paper embellished with embroidery. She uses pulp to create shapes and patterns, then overlays them with thread and pencil marks. Her creations allow the viewer to interpret the work in their own way – a meaning that can vary from one person to another. Buist is intensely tuned in to the environment, manifested in her fuzzy, abstract artwork.

Matière refuge invites the viewer to look the art as a safe space . Buist handmade paper and embroidery creations are not merely the materials that she works with. They have other, deeper dimensions evoking safety, protection, a means of contemplation and of stimulating the imagination. The materials, delicate and yet strong, are a living world unto themselves. Each embroidered stitch, each line, each pattern, traces the passage of time, flowing across the paper like the subtle motion of a receding wave, inviting us to slow down and take a breath.

Véronique Buist lives in Montreal and she holds a bachelor’s degree (BA) in the visual arts from Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). Her work has been shown in a number of cities across Canada and at numerous art fairs and events in Europe. She has also completed several artist residencies in Quebec and abroad that have enabled her to hone her skills and in the process, discover what has become her favorite medium, namely embroidery. One of her artworks was used on the cover of Prise de présences, a book by Vanessa Courville (Editions du Noroît – 2024).
