You’ve certainly heard of the famous ice cream that bears the region’s name, but here, you’ll discover it in a different way… by bike! This two-day itinerary in the Coaticook Valley takes you through delightful country roads and peaceful dales, while following accessible and pleasant gravel routes. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy the great outdoors while making captivating discoveries. Along the way, you’ll find a number of gastronomic stops and sites steeped in history. As a bonus: a few well-chosen stops and an accommodation idea, close to the proposed circuits, so you can set off early in the morning with nothing to worry about.

Pedal along the Route with a Richard Séguin Tune in your Head

Do you want to combine the fun of cycling with exploring the countryside? This 23 km circuit takes you along mainly unpaved roads (61%), with a positive altitude difference of 328 m, alternating gentle climbs and pleasant descents. Perfect for an outing that balances discovering the region with moments of relaxation. As you go, you’ll truly enjoy the scenery and the peaceful surroundings. As a bonus, take a moment in Saint-Venant-de-Paquette, Richard Séguin’s adopted village, to soak up its charm. The route starts out from East Hereford, a pretty village in the Eastern Townships.

When you feel you need to eat a little something, it’s time to take this short detour! Why not stop by THE little canteen in the village of East Hereford, where their quick service means you’ll be back on your bike in no time? There’s no better place to enjoy a menu that proudly bears its name. Try the Baumier hamburgers, the Hereford poutine or the signature poutine, or a bit of everything (careful, cash only). Right next door, picnic tables invite you to relax a bit. You’ll also discover a baseball diamond and amusement park, perfect for stretching your legs before heading out again.

Enjoy a Poetic Stroll

Halfway through your itinerary, plan a stop in Saint-Venant-de-Paquette! Take the Poetry Trail, where poetry and landscapes come together as you go. Discover stone sculptures and French-language poems at your own pace, thanks to an audio guide (you’ll need about 2 and a half hours to complete the entire tour), while taking in the magnificent landscapes. Also, at the end of your exploration, you can relax at a picnic table or enjoy a complimentary ice cream treat. You’ll have regained plenty of energy for the return trip.

For this second day, set a course for the Chameleon Mystic loop, a sixty-kilometre gravel circuit! It starts out from the Parc de la Gorge, but if you’re staying at the Auberge du Changement d’Ère, the route passes right in front of your lodgings. On the agenda: peaceful country roads, quaint farms, gravel roads and magnificent views overlooking the Coaticook Valley. You’ll pass through the villages of Hatley and Barnston-Ouest, and the roads you take offer superb panoramic views of the region (don’t hesitate to stop and take some pictures). A perfect outing for those looking to get away from the hectic pace of life. To make the most of it, be sure to have the right tires for this type of surface... or why not an electric bike?

Just 7 km from the Auberge du Changement d’Ère (or 13 km from the start of the circuit), the Fromagerie La Station is the ideal first stop on your cycling route. Here you’ll discover a real passion for organic farming and artisan cheese. As well as savouring fine cheeses, you can explore the Économusée du fromage fermier, where you can learn the secrets of refining raw milk. Take a moment to say hello to the cows that contribute to this local production before leaving with a few treats to take with you, or treat yourself to a homemade grilled cheese right on the terrace.
