Dimanche de grisaille. J’ai des fourmis dans les jambes et l’envie de faire autre chose que le farniente dans la cour arrière (on commence à en avoir fait le tour, de la cour arrière), mais le ciel est gris et la pluie s’annonce en fin d’après-midi. Tant pis, qu’on se dit, mon conjoint et moi. En bons gestionnaires de famille, nous concluons que notre « planification stratégique » de l’été compte peu de fins de semaine, aussi bien en profiter, même des moins ensoleillées d’entre elles.

On installe les vélos, petits comme grands, sur la voiture. Direction Ayer’s Cliff pour pédaler le Sentier nature Tomifobia, une piste multifonctionnelle qui longe la rivière du même nom entre Ayer’s Cliff et Stanstead. Aménagé en 1993 par l’organisme Sentiers Massawippi, le sentier est accessible aux marcheurs (avec chiens en laisse) et aux cyclistes. Il est bordé de plusieurs étangs de tous les côtés, ce qui en fait aussi un magnifique endroit pour l’observation de la faune. L’hiver, il est également possible d’y pratiquer la raquette ou le ski de fond.
19 km pour l’aller en mode familial, c’est un peu trop… surtout quand on calcule qu’il faut revenir! En observant la carte du parcours, on décide de commencer au kilomètre 6 et de voir jusqu’où la motivation des troupes nous mènera. Résultat? Nous nous rendrons au kilomètre 12 avec beaucoup de plaisir. Fiston en est à peine à sa deuxième année de vélo sans les « p’tites roues » et le douze kilomètres total l’aura fatigué, mais pas trop. Le sentier est parfait pour une balade en famille, car il a été mis en place sur une ancienne voie ferrée… il est donc parfaitement plat! Au retour, nous avions peur d’avoir eu affaire à un faux plat que nous aurions dû « remonter », mais non, ça coule tout doucement, comme la rivière à nos côtés.
Nous faisons plusieurs petits arrêts en route, charmés par les paysages…ou parce qu’un des enfants veut une gorgée d’eau. Nous nous arrêtons sur le pont massif qui devait supporter les trains de jadis. Plus loin, nous observons une famille de bernaches, fière de sa dernière couvée. Au kilomètre 12, où se trouvent des tables à l’abri, nous optons pour la collation. Ça tombe bien! La pluie annoncée en fin d’après-midi est ponctuelle. Pendant notre pause, un colibri à gorge rubis vient nous saluer et un petit suisse vient grignoter quelques miettes laissées par les derniers passants. Ici, la faune est bien présente et se laisse observer.
On se félicite d’avoir prévu les imperméables car le retour se fait sous une douce pluie, quoiqu’un peu fraîche. Ce qui est génial de sortir dans la pluie, c’est que plusieurs promeneurs désertent la piste et que les couleurs des paysages se font plus éclatantes!
Pour prolonger le plaisir, lors des belles journées d’été, n’hésitez pas à combiner votre balade à vélo avec une pause à la plage d’Ayer’s Cliff ou un repas bien mérité au Wood’s Snack bar.
