The history of the Eastern Townships is deeply shaped by its British and American heritage. Follow the footsteps of the region’s earliest settlers—Americans, Loyalists, Scots, and Irish who arrived at the end of the 18th century and throughout the 19th century. Their influence can still be seen today in the landscapes, the architecture, and the cultural fabric of the area.
Along the Townships Trail, you’ll travel through 31 towns and villages filled with character where you’ll find Victorian homes, round barns, covered bridges, museums, churches, interpretation centres, and many other historical gems. Keep your eyes wide open this journey takes you through a living heritage unlike anywhere else in Québec.
The Townships Trail also have various thematic routes : Ancestral Homes Route, Round Barns and Covered Bridges Route, Heritage Route, Panoramic Route, Expertise Route, English Tea Route, Christmas Market Route and Podcast Route.
And since June, a new thematic route has been added : the Founders' Route. With 13 stops along the way, discover the stories of English-speaking women who helped shape the Eastern Townships between 1850 and 1940. Step inside a museum, stop at a heritage site or visit a cultural institution. Each place immerses you in the story of a pioneer, creator, entrepreneur or keeper of knowledge who left her mark on the region. Along the way, collect stamps and learn more about these women through an interactive quiz.
