What to do this weekend – August 10-12

When you see what’s going on this weekend, you might just want to jump in your car and head for the Eastern Townships! You won’t be disappointed….

Les Correspondances d’Eastman

Eastman’s Les Corresponances, a celebration of all things literary, is back again! Cafés with literary-themed brunches, “writing” gardens and a seminar on how to conduct interviews are just some of the key attractions. Helmed by Stéphanie Boulay (one of two talented sisters), Les Correspondances features celebrated authors and performers such as Kim Thuy, David Goudreault, Daniel Grenier, Domonique Demers, Lise Bissonnette and Marie-Louise Arsenault. There’s an area set aside for youngsters with cartoonist Alex A, children’s author Roxane Turcotte, and Sophie Faucher who will be conducting activities for 3-9 year olds – workshops and storytelling.

Travel the world – in Sherbooke!

Take yourself on a culinary, artistic and musical journey during the Festival des traditions du monde de Sherbrooke – an annual event that celebrates Quebec’s diverse population. 150 shows (they open with King Abid, a reggae dancehall band), 17 eateries serving international food, 70 exhibitors and an area (“Place de la famille”) with family activities. An astonishing cross section of cultures!

This showcase of global traditions runs from August 8-12, at the Exhibition Centre in Sherbrooke.

Party time in Lac Megantic!

La Traversée internationale du lac Mégantic, an international swimming competition, is one of the main summer events in Granit regional county. Competitors from around the globe take part in the World Cup 10-km (5.2-mile) swim and along with that is a program of activities for the entire family. Live shows (La Chicane, DJ Miss Shelton, Guylaine Tanguay etc.), inflatable games, fireworks and a lot more besides… (August 9-12).

Time to wish upon a star…..

This weekend is the peak time to view the Perseids (meteor showers). You should be able to enjoy a spectacular display of celestial magic, particularly if you go to the following venues where there is virtually no light pollution. Some places even organize activities and camplng under the stars. The Perseids are best seen in the early hours of the morning (before it gets light), on August 12 and 13. Prepare to make a wish….

Orford Musique’s Grand Finale

August 10 marks the final concert for the Orford Musique Prize and this is your chance to hear 12 talented young musicians – the best students in the 2018 academic year - performing for the very last time! As part of this prestigious competition, members of the audience, on the final evening, will be able to vote for their favorite performer.
