L’un des avantages d’habiter les Cantons-de-l’Est, outre que c’est une région vraiment magnifique(!), est d’avoir accès aux belles montagnes du nord des États-Unis ainsi qu’aux routes vallonnées qui les caractérisent. L’endroit est un terrain de jeu parfait pour les amateurs de cyclisme comme le prouve la Boucle du Berkshire.

Après un départ de Sutton, mon copain et moi avons entamé la boucle du Berkshire, un circuit sur route de 57 km qui allait nous mener à Montgomery, au Vermont, un charmant village de quelque 1 200 habitants avec six ponts couverts à voir.
D’abord, pour faire ce circuit, n’oubliez pas votre passeport! Puis, attention si vous avez la fâcheuse tendance à vous égarer : vérifiez bien votre chemin avant de partir et soyez attentif lorsque vous arriverez sur la route 195. Il y a un embranchement à prendre à droite lorsque vous croiserez la South Richford Road, sans quoi vous vous dirigerez vers Jay Peak. Vous feriez tout de même une très belle sortie, mais vous ajouteriez plusieurs dizaines de kilomètres à votre itinéraire initial de 57 km. De plus, la première côte, et la plus grosse du parcours, se retrouve juste après ce virage, à environ 25 km de notre point de départ. Croyez-moi, elle a de quoi déstabiliser les jambes! Soutenue et s’étirant sur plusieurs kilomètres, elle nous a échauffés pour le reste de cette sortie que je réserverais aux cyclistes de niveau intermédiaire. Heureusement, la vue en haut valait l’effort!
Les couleurs d’automne ont aussi ajouté une touche magique à l’expérience. Si vous faites la boucle de Berkshire à votre tour, je vous mets au défi de ne pas vous arrêter à tous les kilomètres pour prendre des photos! C’est vraiment la beauté des paysages qui fait tout l’intérêt du circuit. Outre dans le village de Sutton, il n’y a pas de commerces ni de restos sur le parcours, sauf au joli village d’Abercorn, près de Sutton, où vous pourrez vous arrêter à la Boulangerie Abercorn Bakery pour faire le plein de bonnes choses.
De retour en sol canadien, nous avons pu profiter du village de Sutton, qui accueille un grand nombre de sportifs après une journée de plein air Plusieurs brasseries et bons restaurants privilégiant les produits locaux s’y retrouvent. Nous nous sommes arrêtés à l’Auberge Sutton Broüerie pour nous imprégner de l’ambiance festive créée par le groupe de musique live. Activité idéale pour repenser à tous les beaux souvenirs créés sur les routes et rêver à la prochaine sortie dans notre belle région! Peut-être le tour du lac Memphrémagog, nous y songeons…
Mon coup de cœur de la journée : le village de Sutton, très chaleureux et dynamique.
