Best Cycling Routes for Fall

Published on Sept 4, 2025

Each autumn, the Eastern Townships transform into a living canvas, where vibrant colors stretch across shimmering lakes and rolling wooded hills. To make the most of this magical season, we asked each region to share their favorite fall cycling route. The result: 9 hand-picked itineraries, selected by those who know the area best.

Whether you’re a fan of road cycling, gravel adventures, or peaceful scenic rides, you’ll find inspiration here to hop on your bike and fall in love with autumn — year after year.

Traverse des Townships – Brome-Missisquoi

Blend into the fall landscape along La Traverse des Townships, a 47 km gravel route featuring tree tunnels, stunning forest views, and stops in the charming town centers of Sutton and Lac-Brome. Wine lovers, take note: Bring empty panniers — you’ll want to fill them with delicious souvenirs.

Graveleur des bois – Coaticook Valley

Get off the grid and into the heart of fall in the Coaticook Valley on the Graveleur des bois route. Starting in East Hereford, this 50 km loop takes you deep into the forest on remote gravel roads, far from traffic and cell signals.

For experienced and self-sufficient cyclists only.

Mont Ham Loops – Des Sources

Circling the southern side of Mont Ham, the Mont Ham loops offer 49 km of peaceful riding and spectacular scenery, especially in October. For an even more beautiful view, add a hike to the summit and soak in a 360° panorama of autumn in full bloom.

From Lake to Mountain – Granit Region

Why choose between a lake surrounded by maples and the rugged forests of Mount Mégantic? With the “From Lake to Mountain” route, you get both! This challenging circuit takes you all the way to the Observatory in Mont-Mégantic National Park, with steep climbs (up to 15%!) that are more than worth the effort for the breathtaking views. The descent leads you back to the picturesque village of Piopolis, with its postcard-perfect scenery.

Two Shores Basin – Haut-Saint-François

There’s no better time than fall to explore the Two Shores Circuit — a 38 km gravel ride featuring two scenic lookouts, a charming covered bridge, and a finish at the local brewery, 11 Comtés. This itinerary combines effort, beauty, and flavor — the very spirit of cycling in the Townships.

Tip: bring binoculars — it’s a hotspot for birdwatchers!

Nature Loop – Haute-Yamaska

Stretching from Lac Boivin to the Choinière Reservoir, the Nature Loop is the ultimate family-friendly fall ride in the Townships. Starting at Granby’s Vélogare, follow the bike path along the Yamaska River through forest tunnels, open fields, rivers, and public art installations. At the park, choose your adventure: continue for 20 more km on gravel, camp overnight by the lake, or head back to Granby for a relaxing downtown stop.

Dock to Dock – Memphrémagog Region

The Dock to Dock loop is a 55 km gravel ride that winds through southern countryside and forested hills, offering frequent views of Lake Memphrémagog. Don’t forget to glance over your shoulder — some of the best views reveal themselves behind you, especially near the docks that gave this route its name.

Tip: take it slow and watch your speed on the Ridgewood descent.

Gravelée des Rives – Around Sherbrooke

From Sherbrooke, enjoy a unique fall cycling experience on the Riverside Gravel route. This loop follows picturesque waterways and delivers one breathtaking autumn view after another. It’s also the perfect time to make gourmet stops — with local producers, vineyards, and microbreweries all along the way.

Maple Loop – Val-Saint-François

Ride through golden fields and fiery maple groves on the Maple Loop, a 45 km route through the heart of the Val-Saint-François. One of the highlights? A jaw-dropping view of Mont Orford from the 9e Rang Ouest. Don’t forget to stock up on fresh and local products at the Marché chez Duff.

Planning to ride after October 15? Choose the modified version of this loop to avoid the Slate Trail section, which closes after that date.

Note: Most cycling-only trails close after October 15 due to seasonal maintenance and safety concerns — check local updates before heading out.
