Geneviève Thibault’s photographs zero in on people’s homes. She examines how the inhabitants interact with their surroundings and what that can reveal about their character, their lifestyles and the spaces they occupy. The artist also looks at how she herself might be viewed by others, constantly tweaking the manner in which she works and seeking to balance the partnerships it creates. She employs the element of surprise to go around the usual way of doing things, not relying on formal encounters with other people, in order to be as authentic as possible. The artist captures the components of a life that are not obvious at first glance, recording the unique stories that they tell.
Geneviève Thibault has taken a somewhat unconventional approach by knocking, unannounced, on the doors of people who lived on a street number 148 (as she herself does). She slipped into the world inhabited by her subjects, observing the way they decorated their rooms, and how the furniture and other objects illustrates their way of life. By doing so, she has captured what these interiors reveal about the people who live in these homes, but also the local community and society at large. The artist strives to understand just what it means to live in today’s fast-paced world. Her photographs are a snapshot (in both senses of the word!) of daily life, shown not by the people themselves, but by the living spaces they have created.
Geneviève Thibault holds a Master’s degree in « pratique des arts » from the Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO) and studied photography at the Cégep de Matane, where she now teaches. In 2024, she was the recipient of the Visual Arts Scholarship awarded by the Yvonne L. Bombardier Cultural Centre. In 2025, Thibault co-curated the 17th edition of Montreal’s annual Festival Art Souterrain.
