Take your pick: adrenaline packed or slow and contemplative?
The main town in the Des Sources MRC, Asbestos was founded in 1899 when mining began on a deposit of Chrysotile asbestos, a strange stone nicknamed white gold. For nearly 120 years, mining shaped this town and left a deep hole two kilometres in diameter, from one of the largest open-pit mines in the world. Today, an observatory from which visitors can view the crater and hear the wind coming from the depths of this giant funnel testifies to the mining history of the site. Asbestos also has a vacation area, Trois-Lacs, where the Camp Musical d’Asbestos’ outdoor playground hosts music camps and musical events. In August, the Festival des Gourmands draws in those with a sweet tooth, and the well-known Grande Foire Minéralogique welcomes gemology buffs from Canada and the United States.
