On Monday, April 8, 2024, the Eastern Townships will be the site of a rare astronomical spectacle - a total solar eclipse. In most other areas of Quebec, the eclipse will be only partial, but the Townships region is right in the heart of the action! Visitors will be able to view the moon lining up across the sun for several minutes, plunging the world below into darkness…..
Whether you’re hiking, on a ski slope, sitting on the terrace of a restaurant or staying at one of our more unusual accommodations in the depths of nature, you’ll be able to experience this fascinating celestial phenomenon.
A number of establishments are organizing special events and activities, themed around the solar eclipse - a great opportunity to discover the region’s art de vivre (“art of living” ) manifested through our gourmet restaurants, wineries, heritage sites and much, much more… Here are some suggested itineraries:
If you’re looking for accommodation, the following one-of-a-kind places to stay are situated within our designated Dark Sky Reserves – areas where there is little (or no) ambient light:
The milder weather is here and spring is in the air, so now is the ideal time to start taking walks in the countryside. Not only will you benefit from being in the fresh air, you’ll come across historic structures such as round barns and covered bridges, that are so much part of the Townships’ heritage.
As you travel around the roads that criss-cross the region, take the time to stop and stretch your legs and to take a really good look at these symbolic reminders of a bygone era. You’re sure to also come across some of our local craftspeople and food producers. They’re always happy to chat as they sell their wares!
Make your road trip even more memorable (and relaxing!) by staying at one of these six cozy country inns.
The arrival of spring heralds the return of many species of birds. After spending the winter in warmer climes, our feathered friends are migrating north again - to the Eastern Townships and beyond.
There are several places around our region where you can observe their return and you don’t have to be an avid birdwatcher to enjoy the spectacle of these lovely creatures as they swoop and soar around the sky. It’s an astonishing sight that warms the heart - no matter how often you observe it! The best time to watch them is at the break of day and don’t forget to bring your binoculars….Here are the five best places to birdwatch in the Eastern Townships:
To immerse yourself totally in nature, book yourself into one of these cabins, all of them nestled among trees and picturesque landscapes.
Although the sugaring-off season is drawing to a close, you can still visit one of the region’s sugar shacks. The Townships’ maple producers are famous for their delicious sweet nectar and these seven sugar shacks listed below (ranging from traditional to contemporary) offer something for everybody!
Those who feel guilty about piling on the calories after a hearty, traditional feast, can assuage their conscience (either before or after the meal!) by taking a vigorous walk either onsite or in the vicinity of the sugar shack – the perfect compromise between a gourmet indulgence and the great outdoors!
End your road trip by staying at one of the region’s B&Bs. They offer an intimate setting, a welcoming décor and are full of character – just some of the many reasons to choose this type of accommodation.
